Is chess really a sport? How should i know, but I know I like to play it. I really want to know why there isn't any thing being done to make this game a reality in american samoa. In the United States, there are compititions between school, differnt organizations ,and it is a respected game. a game that teaches management, tactics, and art of war. It is a part of history, a part of old and new. If one were to merly begin such a program, they would not be short of eager players, or funds. People give away money everyday. I write this not only to make an issue clear, but to ask, "Is there not anyone out there who can make this reality?" Trackbacks

No, I do not believe chess is a sport. If you called chess a sport, you could call anything a sport. Sport: an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competitionChess is not active, and it takes no physical exersion. Chess may be a nice game, but you can not go around calling board games sports.

I would assert that in physically active sports the key to winning is not your physical activity, but your intellectual activity. ie: a stong, dumb man will overall perform more poorly than a weaker, smarter man.It would also then follow that while chess involves very little physical exertion, it requires extreme mental exertion and is a competition based on your actual skills (like a sport involving physical activity) and therefore could reasonabled be called a Sport. Many other board games are games of "chance" (roll the dice) and therefore aren't based on any exertion, phsysical, mental or any combination thereof and therefore should not be considered a sport.
