"Booking with Rinjani Master Trekking"
We had mentioned to one of the staff at Hotel Gili Air that we may like to do a trek to Mount Rinjani. The staff member mentioned this to his friend in Lombok. The next day Awan from Rinjani Master Trekking (081 237 64624) called to Gili Air Hotel. He put a lot of pressure on us to take the trek with him, stating that he came all the way from Lombok to Gili Air especially to see us. We had not asked him to come at all. Eventually we settled for a price of 2.5 million Rupiah for 2 of us, paying an initial deposit of 500, 000 rupiah. We were told by Awan that Rinjani Master trekking had been doing treks for 21 years and knew how to do business with europeans. Over the next few days on Gili Air we could see thunder storms and constant rain on Mount Rinjani. We became a bit worried by this and asked locals on Gili Air would the trek be safe now. Each local (indpendent of the trekking businesses) said that it would now be very dangerous as the rainy season had began. Landslides and mudslides were a genuine threat now (October 27th). So we told our "friend" at Gili Air Hotel that we would not do the trek as we had been advised not to. Our "friend" said nothing. We resigned to losing our deposit. The next morning at 7.30 the manager of Hotel Gili Air came knocking at our bedroom door. He had Awan on the phone. The phone was handed over to me in my haze of sleep. Awan was demanding that we pay 700, 000 more Rupiah for cancelling. He kept saying "I am an honest man, brother, you need to pay me the extra money or there will be problems." He was on his way back to the island. He came at about 9 o clock and demanded the 700, 000 rupiah. He was stating that 500, 000 rupiah covered only food for 3 days. (rice & fruit....no chance). Eventually he started asking other prices 600, 000, 500, 000, 400, 000. As there are no police on the island we had no one to turn to (even if they would have been any help). We told him that a deposit was foir cancellation purposes and we knew he was ripping us off. We asked him what would he have done if we just hadnt told him we were cancelling. He was speechless. He also said that if were sick then it would have been ok, no extra charge. So the deposit would cover the cancellation if were sick but not if we cancelled for dangerous weather conditions. Eventually to get rid of the guy we ended up giving 400, 000 rupiah. We were robbed basically. After double checking afterwards, the trek is at least half the price of 2.5 million rupiah if you do the transport and renting of the trek guide yourself. Moral of the story, dont trust the manager at Hotel Gili Air, dont book with Rinjani Master Trekking. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
