Brazil is a part of the international agreement on driver's licenses. This means that your USA(or UK, Aus, etc) license is valid in Brazil for 6 months.
After this, you need to go the DETRAN(the Dept of Transport in Brazil) & pay to have a Brazilian license issued. If you have a RNE(Registered National Estrangeiro) number it costs R$103 & you will get a normal Brazilian license(no test or anything!). If you don't have an RNE(like me at the moment) it still costs R$103 & you are given a temporary drivers license valid for 6 months. This can be redone each 6 months until you get an RNE but costs R$103 each time.
