For an amazing and disturbing literary journeyinto the heart of the real China, read - FOREIGN DEVIL a novel by Robert Warne. Available as a download or a paperback from: www.lulu.com/foreigndevil Click above for more information, or see below for a preview. (The foreign devil in question is on a first tentative date with his beautiful young Chinese girlfriend.) As we wandered and chatted, I got a strong feeling that fate was leading us on. A full moon came out from behind the last of the departing silvery clouds. Our desultory meandering led us straight to the deserted lakeside boathouse and soon I was rowing her across the smooth, silent water past pavilions and ghostly tree silhouettes, under mock-antique Chinese arches and nine-corner bridges. The scenery was almost too clichéd to be true, just like the gardens on a willow pattern plate. I stopped under some overhanging branches and together we admired the low moon’s brilliant shimmering reflection on the glistening black lake surface. Nature seemed to be doing her best to imitate cheap romantic fiction and urging me to take up the role of the strong, masterful hero. Again I heard that wicked voice in my head telling me, “You’ll never get a better chance than this! Make your move now!” I inched along our seat and put my arm around Angela’s waist, even though I knew full well that such early advances were not the done thing in China. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I merely placed my arm behind her, for we were barely touching, but after a few moments of uncertainty I realised I had made a cataclysmic blunder. She froze like she had been struck dead, and through the corner of my eye I could see that she was staring down in mute consternation at the bottom of the boat.

Hi, been here a cuple of months and it suits me fine - 3 squash courts, gym is always empty, shops plentiful and reasonable - plus, as it's a gated community, VERY safe. Kind of a family feel, so pretty dead at night (apart rom the dozen restarants nearb) - need to take he 50 min bus ride to GZ for evening entertainment - but, after a hard day working in filty GZ, Clifford is a welome andrelaxig change

We live here in Clifford since June 20, 2004. We purchased an apartment in the Horizon place. We like here very much. Only worry is that the number of habitants is growing faster than the infrastructure...Need a larger Supermarket and more parking areas. Is becoming quite crowded there. Wait until the new additions start to be open. renato

Hello. Can someone tell me what but to take to leave Clifford Estates and go Kecun ? I think there is one way to take a bus direct to Ketcun and the other way is to take a bus to a closer Metro station then take the Metro Line ?? Does anyone know what bus numbers or loading bays one must take ?
To" Shely #12, Hi, have you tried JUSCO at TeeMall or METRO? They have better selection of imported stuff. We've been to Metro in Huangpu Dadao/ Keyun Lu, next to it is B&Q (kind like Home Depot in US) and Kinhom - a big furniture store. We took bus 10A from Clifford to subway and Tiyu Xi Lu is where you stop for JUSCO, to go to METRO/ B&Q you can take subway to Pazhou and taxi for about Y15, - Hope this help.

The housing is much better than it used to be when I first arrived. It used to be pretty bad, and that, too, caused many of us to leave. Now it is much better than before. The housing is situated in a part of Guangzhou that has less pollution that the rest of Guangzhou. Shopping is easily available, but it is wise to avoid Clifford Hospital. Like many hospitals in China, they try to offer you an IV for almost everything, and the doctors don't seem to know what is in the IVs they are giving you. I was not there at the time, but I heard from another friend of mine that a teacher who is currently there got sick this school year and went to the hospital. From what I am told, he ended up so sick from the medicine that they gave him that the doctors wanted to operate on him for something they themselves had caused! He went elsewhere and found non-surgical treatment, as I am told, and that is good. It still cost him thousands of dollars, from what I am told. Clifford Hospital is very close and convenient, but so is Dr. Death. The insurance Clifford School offers pretty much requires you to go to Clifford Hospital or another slipshod one or face a lack of coverage. Most wise people pass on it completely.. Some of the students are nice and do try their best. Some of the parents can be really awesome and supportive. The facilities are adequate, though the library is a tad too small. The Bad I am writing a review of Clifford School in Guangzhou, China and one of its assistant principals there, Brad Zawodny. The school itself has a nice building and many nice staff members. The parents can be seriously out of control "helicopter parents, " and the administration lets them get away with far too much. On certain days they allow the parents to videotape everything. Many of them come equipped with phones, video cameras, the works. Some of them are nice, but when you try to do nice things for most of them, they just want more and more. There is seldom, if ever, an "enough." Many of them are simply never satisfied. The more you give, the more they want! Many of the students there at Clifford School are sweet enough. However, a lot of the students fight, hit and punch others all the time. It's not worth the headache to ever work at that school. They just don't pay enough for what most people have to go through! Since Clifford School has a very high turnover rate, new teachers are often in as soon as they are out, and the same is true with other staff. Many of the students fight, kick and punch each other all of the time. Some of the parents are supportive, but many are not. Many of them leave their children there at the school for a very long time (i.e.., 75%) and expect the teachers and teaching assistants to do everything for their children while they go off and pursue a career and/or hobbies. What's worse, many of the students see their Chinese teachers as people to be taken seriously and the foreign ones as people to laugh at and ignore. Foreign teachers' classrooms are, to many of the students, seen as playpens of sorts, while they pay strict attention in their Chinese classes--or else! Brad Zawodny is one of the assistant elementary school principals there. Brad’s not a bad guy. He's just not an effective communicator and holds grudges against people like you would not believe. I have seen him do that with many others, and I don't doubt that he still does it. It is unfortunate that he never really sees his own faults very often. You don't want to work under him or with him under any circumstances. I worked with him two years ago when he first started out but hear from others that he still has not changed.. Never work under him! STAY AWAY FROM CLIFFORD SCHOOL IN GUANGZHOU, CHINA!!! • Page 1 (Original Post) • Page 2 (Newest Replies) •
