I think you will find the cost of living to be very low compared to the USA and of good quality.

I am told foreginers are mugged at gun point and robbed in broad day light?

I think you need to replace "foreigners" with people. Though as a foreigner you will probably stand out and may be targetted because of that, in general the crime is against the people of Colombia.

Some of the problems have been: taxi's in Bogota... you flag one on the street and after you get in a thief gets in a takes you to an ATM at gun point where you unload all your cards for them.

In Barranquilla if you use an ATM on the street or withdraw a cash from a bank you are then held up.

I am told that Medellin is much safer now because the people will shoot robbers on the street.

I have gone to Colombia many times and never had a hint of a problem.

The buses in Bogota were extremely crowded lots of pushing and nowhere to go. Kinda like being packed in like sardines. This was on the platform before getting on the bus and on the buses.

I had a bit of fear about pickpockets, but the reality was it was just a whole bunch of people trying to get where they were going.

I have lived in Medellin for about 2 years, with zero problems. People are super friendly, including the taxi drivers. Medellin is very inexpensive, you can live well on $ 1000 per months. Health insurance, residency are easy to get. The government wants us here and makes it very easy to stay as long as you want. Doing business is based on contacts, I finally got a lot of them which makes it much easier also.
