Is it Citizenship or Residency you are looking for?

I am married to a Colombian, and at various points have contemplated retirement in Colombia. Some years ago I wrote the Colombian embassy to enquire about residency status. They advised that there would be no problem to obtain residency. We are comtemplating the idea again.

I am also married to a Colombian. We are retiring to Colombia next year. I have spoken to the Colombian Consulate, You can visit their Web Site, and down load the info concerning permanent spousal residency. The process is very easy, but requires 2 years residency in Colombia.

You will be gratified to know that some of the more egregious requirements have been eliminated. For example you don't need the notarized Police report and will not need to deal with the Apostille(Apostillados). Here are the requirements:

1.Two (not three)passport pictures.

2.Valid passport or Document of Travel.

3.Fill in the application form.(You can print this form from several sites)

4.Photocopy of Passport.

5.Authenticated copy of the Marriage Certificate.

6.Written application of the Colombian spouse requesting the visa.(They even have a sample of a letter that one can use)

7.Authenticated copy of the Colombian spouse's ID.(cedula de cidadania)

I am 70 years old and am thinking about retiring in Cali, Colombia. I would be interested in purchasing a home and also am an avid tennis player. Is Cali a reasonably good selection and what would be the life style cost. Also, what are the medical costs likely to be in Colombia. Does the Medicare of the U.S. apply?

Thanks a lot.

Don

My daughters were born in the United States and are US citizens. Their mother, my wife, is Colombian, and now also an American Citizen through the naturalization process, so she has dual citizenship. How can my daughters become Colombian citizens in addition to their American citizenship?

A lot is mentioned about Cali. Have you ever thought of Medellin? Also check for info on Visas on this site. Good luck!
