I moved here from California about 10 months and so far I am love it here.
So, I will try to pre answer some questions that I had before I came and maybe provide some additional information.
District 20 schools is a really excellent school district and a lot will tell you that it is the best. From personel experience it far exceeds any schools my children attended in California.
The D20 and/or Briargate area is a really nice area to live. I am currently living in that area and feel very safe. It is clean and well kept and the rents compared to California are dirt cheap although considered pricey maybe in CS.
If you plan on renting before you buy, which I reccomend so you can see and feel where you want to live, and are not used to the snow, get a place with an attached garage. I am so glad I did.
I was shocked when I brought my washer and dryer out here to find most places provide them but what was worse is that my gas dryer is pretty much useless because most places I have seen do not have gas hook ups for them. So sell it before you come.
Also, if renting.. be prepared to pay all utilities and not even actual costs. I am so used to getting free gas and water and paying only for my usage of everything that I was completely shocked when I found out I had to pay for everything and not my actual usage. A lot of places are not individually metered but only metered for the entire complex. So, they get a water bill or gas bill in, take 15% off the top and then divide the rest amongst the residents. Really sucks when they do a lot of grass watering etc, . Even if you were out of town for a month and had everything off you will still get billed. Some things I cant wait until California lawyers come out here and fix..
The snow is not that bad. Most major streets and cleaned up pretty good. I was afraid I would be embarressed at my slow driving during icey conditions and holding up traffic but as it turned out, everyone is really careful when the roads are bad. Remember, if you get a 4x4 its 4 wheel drive and not 4 wheel brakes.
Well, hope this helps some people. Maybe some others can join in and post some tips about CS.
