What are the best Costa Rican desserts? I have not heard much about sweets. I know in the United States we have everything you can possibly think of.

I have had a few different pudding varieties. Like, rice pudding and some fruit puddings. They also have some varrieties of pound cakes.

I just googled and here's what i found:

cono capuchino - an ice-cream cone topped with chocolate

dulce de leche - a syrup of boiled milk and sugar. Also thicker, fudgelike cajeta - delicious!

flan - cold caramel custard

mazamorra - corn starch pudding

melcocha - candy made from raw sugar

milanes - chocolate candies

pan de maiz - corn sweet bread

queque seco - pound cake

torta chilena - multilayered cake filled with dulce de leche

These deserts just don't sound too appealing. American desserts have a much larger variety, but I suppose that also helps contribute to us being overweight as well.

Costa Rica has many great varietties of cakes, pudding.etc; one of the most popular desserts are Tres Leches which is basically a "milk" cake. It is made of evaporated milk, condensed milk, half 'n' half flour sugar vanilla eggs(optional) and baking soda and there might be more ingredients. Another popular dessert is Raisin Pudding and Rice Pudding.

There isn't a translation for cajeta. Cajeta is also referred to as dulce de leche. There is no English word that is used to describe cajeta...sorry.

I don't think you can buy cajeta in the stores. I'm pretty sure you have to make it yourself by cooking the milk.

It may be difficult to buy in stores in the USA... but it is certainly easy to buy in many if not all parts of South and Central America!

According to Wikipedia... follow the link below... the translation would be "milk candy". They also have a couple links on how to make it yourself.

Personally, I find it disgusting. Milk is disgusting. Sweet stuff is disgusting. Dulce de leche is double disgusting.

Haagen Dazs claims to have a dulce de leche ice cream, their website says: "inspired by Latin America's treasured dessert, our dulce de leche ice cream is a delicious combination of caramel and sweet cream, swirled with ribbons of golden caramel."

http://www.artisansweets.com sells Dulce de Leche... its currently $10 for 16 oz! Put Leche in their search box to find it. In English they call it "Milik Caramel"
