Is it possible for someone form outside of Cuba to buy property? Thanks
Reply #2 Bill (152.163.36.248) -
You will probably find that U.S. Citizens are not allowed to buy property in Cuba (per US Regulations). They aren't even allowed to visit! That sets a poor stage for Cuban's to understand a way of life different than Castro's vision.

I know that we cannot buy land or visit, but I want to be ready for when it does happen. I have a feeling that in the not so near future things will change. I want to be ready. Maybe working with a Canadian citizen as a partner I can get in on the "ground floor". Just looking for options. Any ideas?

I don't think the Cuban government permits ANYONE except Cubans to own property. I could be wrong... but when I was in Cuba we spotted a gorgeous estate in Havana... and from what I understood we could buy it through a Cuban... who would become the legal owner in Title ... and then we would have to depend on his honesty to honor that we were the actual property owners in spirit. It would have been a sweet deal for our Cuban friend ( in that he would have owned a gorgeous estate and been able to live there ) but our position as 'outsiders' would have always put us at risk of having him enforce his 'rights' as owner and turfing us out or refusing us permission to go to the estate that we had in fact paid for.Possibly sometime in the future property ownership rules will be relaxed... but I don't think so. Most countries impose rules on who can own property within their jurisdictions etc. Too bad because Cuba could seriously use a controlled influx of property owners who can RESTORE and RENOVATE the properties back to their former glory. Sadly... most of the real estate in Cuba has gone down the toilet. Houses ( and I use that word loosely ) often have gaping holes in their roofs. Similar problems exist with the walls of many of the structures. Sadly the average Cuban has not got the financial means or even the access to the materials to effect repairs on the homes. .

That would still be a crime under U.S. Law I believe. Then it gets worse... when you go back into the U.S.A. I believe the U.S. Customs Service has a question on their form "What countries have you visited?" Aren't you then making a false statement on that form when you just forget about your trip to Cuba? Now that doesn't mean I am against Americans visiting Cuba. I think it is a great it and the best way for Cubans to know a way of life other than Fidel's way.

Well i just got back from cuba, and it is possible for you to buy homes in cuba if you are NOT american. Contrary to what many american think- the cuban people are happy...and they express it in their laid back way of life. School is paid for, and i mean university! Medical is paid and so is some other expenses like food and monthly expenses. They have a very well managed communist government that works well for them. Surely u will find other who aspire to be richer than their fellow citizens but the majority have a cuban pride that not many are aware of. Many of the homes that you see that are broken down are the homes soley owned by locals who dont work...and not oowned by the government. Other building that are freshly painted and are kept well are government provided. Of course some areas are better kept than others but there are zero homeless people in cuba- which is more than we can say for anywhere else!! Havana is a beautiful place old and new! Anyhow, i dont see how an american can buy land there being that it is A) forbidden not only by the cubans but also the american government...they'll take ur passport away from u...and B) this "regime" will only cease once the US goes in and declares WAR...against the people's wishes.

P.sCubans are well aware of other forms of government...canda, italy, spain, germany, france, Argentina and britan are some of the countries that share close ties with cuba...so they do know " way of life other than Fidel's way "

This reply is directed at Ange. What you saw and heard in Cuba is the propaganda pushed on the tourists. Whether you knew it or not, every moment you were there you and the people you were with were being watched. I know because I lived there for almost 2 years as a mexican citizen. 80% of the people are waiting for the current embargos on trade with and from the US to be lifted. What you didn't see were the lines a kilometer long for toilet paper, milk, and other supplies. Why do you think approximately 1000 people a month try to escape Cuba and illegally immigrate to Mexico and the US? In the past Cubans who immigrated to the US used to send money back to Cuba for their families and the US dollar was welcome there. The houses you saw that were nice and painted because in the past, they had family that lived in the US who sent them money. 3 years ago, fearing an economic disruption, Fidel mandated the US dollar could be used only for essential supplies such as food and medicine. Yes, it is true schools are subsidized by the government however if you are not in good standing with the government you or your children are not allowed to attend school. You talk about there are no homeless in Cuba. Did you happen to see the colonials where all the houses are made from cardboard boxes, wood scavanged from other houses falling down, and palm fronds? Did you see the 9 and 10 year old children prostituting themselves so thier families could eat? Yeah, maybe they do have a little spot to call home but it is reasonably the same as the camps of homeless I have seen in the US. The world you saw as a tourist and the world in which the Cubans live on a daily basis is 180 degrees opposite. Hopefully with a change in administration in the US the embargos will be lifted and life will get better there because you are correct about one thing; the people there are kind, generouse, happy and outgoing.
