NUDE WALLS - DRESSED CANVASES
‘SILKS GALLERY’ CELEBRATES ITS OFFICIAL OPENING
Jackson Pollock is probably one the first artists who springs to mind when talking about industrial paint (better known as gloss enamel paint) on canvas. He is one of the most recognisable abstract-expressionists, who moved away from the traditional oil paint towards something that has revolutionised the whole world art scene with his famous ‘drip paint’ technique served straight out of a can onto a canvas.
Glossy industrial paint is slowly infiltrating the Cypriot art scene, as ‘Silks Gallery’ has demonstrated with its glossy exhibition put on by Kate Masalova at the gallery’s OFFICIAL LAUNCH PARTY on the 26th Jan 2008.
The opening was made by George Nicolaou, an interior designer, who is better known for his design work on the ‘SOBOH HOUSE’ at the Limassol seafront. Amongst those who attended were the ‘Bank of Cyprus’ (IBU), ‘Interorient Navigation Co Ltd’, ‘Pricewaterhouse Coopers’, ‘Easy-Forex’, ‘Aphentrica Marine Insurance, ‘Soboh Group’ and many other public & private collectors.
Seeing the art show one’s eye doesn’t register at first that one is looking at a work of art that was created using the industrial high gloss paint. The works look no different from oil paintings with a slightly lacquered finish. The hyperrealist approach to the subject matter of the portrayed figures with cubes and sea vessels is unlike anything we are used to seeing when talking about industrial paint. One rarely thinks of the wall paint in our homes as being anything other than an interior design element, in fact one rarely notices the wall paint, but the artist certainly proves that wall paint doesn’t have to be used only on walls and surfaces, it can also be used to create very dramatic 3-Dimensional paintings.
The whole concept of this new gallery is to promote up and coming talents from around the world and to provide the already-established artists with an enhanced art platform to showcase & market their works.
One of the ways in which the gallery plans on doing so, is to keep up the yearly tradition of hosting the ‘YOUNG ARTISTS AWARDS’, an international visual arts competition with a total of EUR3000 awarded to the top 3 winners and a portion of the sales proceeds going to charity. For more info on how to enter this and other competitions visit www.SILKSGALLERY.com (website is partly under construction).
‘Silks Gallery’ certainly promises to boost the Cyprus art scene as a whole and to deliver many more talents from around the world, thus making this not only a European art scene, but a global stage for artistic talents.
