I belong to India and have lived close to the Himalayas. I have never seen any dolphin in my entire life, save the television. Even in the idiot box, these creatures appear to be so fascinating and I am sure that these creatures are capable of leaving anyone spellbound. However, I am sorry to learn that in a place known as Faroe Islands, a typical dolphin, Calderon, is slaughtered in huge numbers by locals in a weird custom just to mark entering the adulthood. I am sure there are many more challenging tasks that a person can do rather than killing these innocent creatures to show his coming of age. I urge the govt of Denmark and all its citizens to put an end to this practise, which is both inhuman and destructive environmentally. Let us let those animals live in peace which certainly do not disturb us.

Shame upon the people of the Faroe Islands for letting this senseless slaughter of these beautiful creatures occur. I thought Denmark was a civilised country, but I now have serious doubts. There must be better ways of celebrating the passage into adulthood than by killing the innocent Calderon dolphins. Please Denmark Government and the European Union, do something to end this barbaric practice. Peter Carter, Perth, Australia

This is an act so barbaric, it goes way beyond words...and what is even more maddening is the fact that it is done out of some ridiculous ritual that is cruel and evil... what a way to enter into adulthood, teaching these youths to be mean spirited instead of loving and kind toward these gentle calderon dolphins... Something needs to be done in the most urgent way...

CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICERS IN WHALING & DOLPHIN KILLING NATION ANNOUNCE THE WHALERS HAVE POISONED THEIR OWN FAMILIES & PEOPLE.The Faroe islands, situated between Scotland and Iceland, but belonging to DENMARK have been one of the last strongholds of traditional whaling, with thousands of small pilot whales killed every year, and eaten by most Faroese. Today in a statement to the islanders, chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Hřgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption. The work has revealed that the Faroese have now damaged themselves. Medical studies have found damage to their own childrens fetal neural development, impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems and possibly infertility in adults. The Faroes data renewed concerns about low-level mercury exposures elsewhere. Anti-whaling groups have long warned about this, but the Faroese failing to listen, argued that whaling is part of their culture - an argument adopted by large-scale whalers in Japan and Norway. And now the Faroese people are paying the price, which is a sentence of deformed children, brain tissue damage to their own families, and sickness in their own people whom they told whale and dolphin meat was good to eat-it's poison. The Faroese own medical officers have now recommended a stop to the eating of all whale and dolphin meat as unfit for human consumption. And the pro-whalers that advocated eating it have now poisoned the Faroese people. "It is with great sadness that this recommendation is provided, " they said. But in "a bitter irony", they said, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese themselves has shown that mercury, especially, causes lasting damage. But "these results have already led to tightened restrictions on pollution worldwide. We must therefore also ourselves acknowledge the consequences." # What can You do to help about this right now? 1. Go to www.SeaShepherd.org charity site and click donate.html to send a little to help the whales, dolphins and the Faroese children. SeaShepherd charity fights whale & dolphin killers, and SeaShepherd helps protect the good Faroese people and children against the group of bad Faroese people who kill, slaughter whales, massacre dolphins, and use the excuse of tradition to poison their own people. 2. Also help fight the whale & dolphin killers in Taiji JAPAN where they do the same thing. And seal killers in Newfoundland CANADA and Greenland where sealers have poisoned the native Inuit people so badly that blood samples taken from Canadian & Greenland's native aboriginal Inuit indian people are now so contaminated they are classified as toxic waste. The majority of the world is against this, however small pockets of extremist seal killers in Newfoundland comprising only 1 ten-thousandth of Canada, who are not native but anglo and doing it for money, not for sustenance, and Japanese whale killers which comprise only 1% continue to destroy the lives of not only animals but also people, including hurting their own children and causing the birth of deformed infants. 3. Visit bluevoice.org to learn more about the scientific and medical analysis and harmful effects of eating seal meat, seal oil, whale meat, whale blubber, and dolphin meat. non-profit scientific information. _

It is very sad indeed. But I hope that all those who are against this dolphin killing are not hypocritical, and do not eat any meat at all, and are against the killing of all animals. There is no difference between these dolphins and cows or pigs raised to be slaughtered for consumption be people!

Talk about pathetic. The EU bans seal products from Canada because in their opinion, the Seal Hunt is not considered humane. However, they allow this to happen on their doorstep? Atleast the seal hunt is federally regulated and enforced by fisheries and wildlife officers. They are shot with guns, not driven ashore, the put on a hook and sliced open in the water. Leave the poor whales alone! Have we not tortured their kind enough?

I'm saddened by this incredible act of barbarism. It's inhumane!!!!! Men are not better by killing innocent animals. That just makes you KILLERS and cowards for attracting these friendly animals to your shores and then with no mercy dig hooks on their body until they die. What a ridiculous way to show your manhood. Shame on you.
Reply #17 Newfoundlander (142.163.128.91) -
And to think the EU is banning seal products from Canada because it is so inhumane. What a joke!! At least the seals are killed for food and fur, not some silly barbaric ritual. The EU should be ashamed to even mention Canada until they take care of there own barbarians.

I am boycotting Denmark, will never visit or encourage friends to visit. This is ridiculous and shameful! The government should be ashamed. With all the efforts these days to save our planet and its creatures you do not go ahead and commit such horrific extreme crimes simply for initiation into adulthood?!? How unmanly and immature are these people that they need to go through such extremes with such gentle creatures. This is sickening. I urge the government to do something about this before something gets done about it for them. Im disgusted.

This is really Funny !! How can people prove they are adult by killing the most friendly creature on Earth !! It just shows their Cowardness !! Ask these men to show adulthood by saving a life, or by preventing Crimes !! That would be real Courage & Adulthood !! Shameless are these men who dont care what a life means !! Why dont they try killing their own loved ones like they are killing these creatures... Would they !!! Whats the government doing about this... Are they cowards too..... Stop Travelling to DENMARK !!!

I'm danish and I'm really amazed to see the total and utter lack of research done before posting such a bloody piece of news! I wonder if this piece is done by a fanatic with no interest for the small details that are part of a little thing we call REALITY?? First og all: They're not dolphins, but pilotwhales. This is a custom that takes place in the Faroe Islands, islands far far away from Denmark. The Faroe Islands have had homerule and their own parliament since 1948, which means that the Danish government can do absolutely nothing to change the barbaric tradition. But before judging, keep in mind that the whale has been and still is a fundamental part of nutrition for people living on these extremely isolated and remote islands made of rocks and with very little possibility for grazing and cultivating of any sort of plantfood.

AND AGAIN: The Faroe Islands are NOT part of the European Nations. • Page 1 (Original Post) • Page 2 • Page 3 (Newest Replies) •
