I have heard that Ecuador is developing a program or system for non-citizens to retire there. Has anyone any knowledge of this? If so, where can I get more acurate current information? Trackbacks

Hello,We have a new website which is a free forum for Americans retiring abroad. We have a Ecuador Expat Forum, and we are also seeking information on Ecuador visa requirements for retirement. Please register at our board, and this information should become available. Thanks, Jeffrey www.RetireAway.com

There are several catagories for foreign retirees moving to Ecuador. The simplest is the Investor Visa, which requires nothing more than the purchase of a $1400 (Yes, that's one thousand four hundred dollar) certificate of deposit in the central bank of ecuador (Banco Central de Ecuador). There's nothing more to it! Ecuadorian attorneys will offer to handle the paperwork for you for a thousand dollars or so, but you can easily complete and submit the paperwork yourself while residing in Ecuador. Go for it!

I am currently retired in Thailand and have been for three years and have a Thai wife. There are many visa restrictions here and the longest that you can get is one year. Makes you a bit uncomfortable. Life is good here but very hot.It is hard to determine much from these boards as they are designed to get you to buy what they offer. I can and do rent a two bedroom two bath house here for $70. a month and it's nice. Is that possible there? A track home here with very little land runs about $38,000 how about there? Of course one of the things about Thailand is the entertainment, available there as well? We do a lot bowling and motorcycle touring possible there? I see things with an average tempature of 75 degrees true? Beach house for 40K true? Lastly, I have lived as an expat for three years now and I know adjustmetns will have to be made. How do you enjoy life there? Ray.

I am looking for some information on moving to Ecuador. I can run my internet business from there and feel it is a good option. What about the situation of crime? I am an American and have been to Guayaquil before and did not feel safe at all. There was a lot of crime. Visited last in 2001.

I think you kinda answered your own question about safety: "did not feel safe at all."Another important question is internet access. Have you considered other places? The Uruguay Forum seems to indicate that both safety and internet access are good.

Hello all, I own a spacious 6, 600 sq ft oceanfront house 8 kms north of Montanita Ecuador and have enjoyed the relaxing pace of life in this area. The cost of living is unbelievably low with the freshest fruits, vegetables, poultry, and seafood plentiful. We get our milk and dairy products directly from the local dairy...organic and inexpensive as well. The sunsets are spectacular especially when viewed from the patio or balconies of my house. From June-Sept the weather is typically overcast skies and cooler temps while Dec-April are sunnier and warmer. My house has tile floors throughout with 8BR's (4 face the ocean w/private baths; two pairs of BR's share a bath between each pair). My place is currently being operated as a "hosteria" to accomodate travelers in the area. It is also available for purchase or lease to someone interested in a great opportunity and lifestyle.

I live, work and play in Cotacachi, Ecuador, 2 hrs n. of Quito. It's a small town, quiet and exceptionally clean, with a great market, very cheap cost of living. My husband and I rent a gorgeous penthouse studio apt. w/fab views for $120 a mo. We spend $10-12 a wk. on fresh produce. Water is $3 a month, electricity is $15-18, phone is a flat rate of $6 and high-speed internet is $50 a mo. Dental care is cheap and good. Recently my husband Gary dislocated his shoulder. 2 visits to the hospital, xrays, meds & bandage came to $93. We do our best to cover all questions newcomers to Ecuador might have. Write us if you don't find answers you need on our website.

Gary and I have lived in Ecuador for almost 11 mos. We hired an attorney in Quito and got our resident visas about 6 mos. ago. The process is not difficult. Each visa costs $350 plus attorney's fees, notary costs, copies of your passport, etc. There are several different ways to obtain a resident visa. See our website: www.pro-ecuador.com, for the options. We chose to go the investment route. For an investment of $25, 000 plus $500 more for a spouse, we opened a CD at a Quito bank. To change categories, we can pay a small fee & use this CD to invest in land, real estate or business. If you have a guaranteed pension of $800 per month, you can apply for a retirement resident visa. Getting a resident visa requires that you live in Ecuador for 9 mos. out of 12 for the next 2 yrs.

You can read about our travels on retire-in-ecuador.com or email me through the site. Ciao Dixie

Hi you all, As a former student of the US i hope to be of some assistance here. I live in Quito, its a nice spring like climate city all year round, with a rainy season. Lots of Malls and Supermarkets with US products, good private health, very bad public health. I would deffinetly recommend living in Quito or Cuenca over Guayaquil for security reasons. I have a very confortable style of living on a 2000 per month income. Here are some costs: Two bed appt in a nice building (Fraisier like) is around 400-600 month. That will be a less than 10 year old building. Cheaper 2 bd. appartments will cost as low as 150 a month. You can rent a nice luxury house, pool, gated comunity, suburbs for around 800-1500. new 2 bd appartment around 70.000 2 bd. appartment in the beach around 55.000 in a gated comunity (casablanca) Small 2 store house 3 bd in gated community 60.000, Luxury house in suburbs 4 bd.with pool, marble floors, etc... 250.000 and up Wage for a private nurse around 400 per month wage for a maid 250 per month meal in a 4 star restaurant $10-20 per person, marriot buffet $18, Combo at mcdonalds $3, 50, large pizza hut or dominos $13 Litre of milk $ 0, 80-1, 00 bread 0, 10 cents each loaf of bagguette 0, 80 Movie tickets $3, 50 theatre tickets varies a lot on play, but around $15 fruit and veggies - really cheap Taxi fare for 10 miles ride about $5, 00, be carefull here.. local taxi cabs are famous for giving foreins a higher price. Its always advisable to arrange that beforehand. New small car $8.000-18.000 Peugeot 206 st 14.000 New luxury car $45.000 and up Used cars in good shape $5.000 and up 4x4's are very popular here because of safety and bad road manteinance, lots of small holes on the roads, - used Ford Sportrac 2003 $26.000 Prices in smaller towns are generally cheaper specially on housing. i have several forein friends living and working here and they seem to like it, not all the people speak english(but most do to some basic degree), so its advisable to learn the basics of spanish. hope this is of assistance. if you need any more info Ill be glad to help! pxhidalgo@hotmail.com Pablo

I got a few more data that i think might be usefull if I though of moving abroad. Direct TV (satellite television) around 70 per month Broadband Internet starting from 45 per month (its a bit slow) Flight Quito-Miami-Quito $400-1000 Night in 4-star hotel $75 Haircut $3-7 men proffesional translating services around $10-15 per page We have lots of touristic places in Ecuador and most are just a couple of hours drive away, and we also have the Galapagos Islands. Good luck with your plans! Pablo pxhidalgo@hotmail.com

I spent a week in Cuenca in Nov 2007, I found a heavy diesel/exhaust smell in the city. Was this just a bad weather pattern holding in the exhuast? I am also considering Cuenca for retirement. Thanks Will

My Girl and I just got back form Visiting Ecuador, we spent time in Banos and Mindo and loved it. Does anyone have any real estate info for these areas? Protected/park etc? Dangerous, earthquakes eruptions, taxes? Seemed more our style. I know the active Volcano there is working overtime but just wanted to know some more about that area. I am looking to return to live in Ecuador and found these areas interesting to say the least.

Hey Ray, I have traveled and lived both in the far east and Ecuador and here is my take... -rents are a little bit cheaper over in thailand than Ecuador, but to buy is cheaper in Ecuador -Ecuador has a lot of variety in a little area, with the andes, amazon, pacific, galapagos and more all within a stones throw. -Making local friends is easier in Ecuador. Mainly because Spanish is much easier to learn than Thai. -Food in Thailand is better...but the fresh fruit juices in ecuador are to die for -The weather is about the same as thailand at around 80-85 degrees in the coastal regions. -Answering ur Q...Beach houses are just starting to be discovered, and can still be had for prices around $40K -entertainment consists of everything Latin, soccer, dancing, fiestas, etc. along with all the outdoor sports u could want...there is bowling in the major cities and the coast is great for motorcycle rides Check out my report on Beachfront Property in Ecuador for much more info on finding the best steals on the coast...
