taupo
R. Cremer (67.8.88.40) -
many years ago, when visiting fiji, I bought a taupo which is about 90 inches by 40 inches. It has many designs and natural brown shades of brown colors. It is on what appears to be man made paper made from bark. Where can I find similiar items on the net? How can I determine the value of this taupo that I have? Trackbacks

I think you mean TAPA, which is the generic pan-Pacific term for barkcloth made from the Paper Mulberry tree. The Fijian barkcloth is called MASI. Taupo is a town in New Zealand.

I visited Fiji in 1996 for a wedding, and have lost contact with my friends who got married there, Linise & Nick Crompton. I believe they are living in England. If anyone has contact details please send to surinpaul@http://hotmail.com

you wont find much on the history of Fijian Art as art is not separated from everyday life. All artefacts have a purpose. For a few ideas wikipedia and the Fijian government have a little information. The best place i have found for information about artefacts has been my local library and museum. There is some contemporary Fijian artists living in New Zealand, Sophia Tekela-Smith is the most well known.

Hi - I have just purchased an original painting depicting an island beach scene with thatched roof huts, palm trees and two people walking on the beach...It is gorgeous! However, It looks to be signed P vuniceva 93 - Having googled this artist the only info I can find states that there is a one handed fijian artist by that name who is quite famous but I cannot find further information or see examples of his work anywhere!! Could anyone help me with further information on this artist and/or perhaps direct me to site/s that may help??Cheers, Shelly
