I have an English friend living and working in France on a self-employed basis. Being self-employed, she has to make many contributions called cotisations. She will soon be 65 and would like to semi-retire. However, the law in France is that she would still have to pay the same amount in cotisations, even if she is earning, for instance, only one third of her current income. This makes it impossible for her to retire since she has only her basic English retirement pension, a very small French pension and very modest savings. What does she have to do to survive?
