Would like any info or advice on going to live and work (if possible)in the Gambia 4 5 or 6 months. Prices of cheap compounds or rooms, what type of work if any etc. I am under no illusions it will be easy but would like to have the experience. I am open minded and adaptable but know it will not be easy. What requirements do I need to live and work there? Please can you offer any advice.

Hi ther,

I'm a U.K. middle aged woman looking to move to The Gambia within the year. Need advice on costs of buying a small property and the cost of living after that. I am travelling to The Gambia on July of this year. If anyone, who has this kind of information, will be there too - it would be great to meet and talk.

My mother in law lives in Gambia. The only thing I can tell you is that she, her husband, and my younger sister in law live off of the $150 american we send them every month. Of course, they are natives to Gambia and are accustomed to living without some of the comforts we have here (like packaged foods, disposable hygene products etc...) so costs of things they cant do them selves (like transportation, shoes, some foods, rent money etc...) is what takes up the majority of the money we send them. My father in law lives in Senegal (the country surrounding Gambia) and he said to live with all the comforts of America or Europe, it would cost a family of four between $500-700 american a month, depending on if you are renting or buying your home, if you own a car, a cell phone vs. land line (land lines are MUCH more expensive) Either way, the cost of living is relatively low depending on how you like to live.
