Check out www.noworriesghana.com. It's a website run by the North American Women's Association in Ghana and has information on everything about living in Accra, from dry cleaners to supermarkets to, yes, gyms. You'll do just fine on gyms.

And there's no need to live in an expat compound - you'll find a house in Accra with a gate and security guard, no problem. Jamestown is, well, let's say it's not the most exclusive area of town, but it's not threatening either. Just kinda rundown and poor. But the Ghanaians are wonderful - warm and friendly and welcoming. There is crime here, of course, but far less than in most Western cities.

Good luck with the move.

Hello!

I'm 24 years old and about to move to Accra. It's for an indefinite amount of time with a job opportunity, and I wanted to know if there are any other young expats I could talk with about their experiences in Accra, places to live, things to do, etc.

I'm big on local culture, sports, arts...you name it. I'm really excited but a little timid, as this will be my first visit to the African continent.

Any friendly input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Depends on what kind of internet access you want in your home, but high speed, and T1 are available. Cost starts from about US$60 a month for high-speed. Some of the internet companies advertise on www.ghanaweb.com

hi all, i have lived in ghana as an expat for 6 years, and left in 2004. i love the place. liviong costs are high if you want western shopping at supermarkets, allow 2 or 3 times the cost of uk. housing is expensive. the best place i stayed was Taysec gardens. it is a secure compound, with squash court, bar, pool, and next to the british high commision. going out was safe when i left. beaches to go is white sands, very nice but i heard iot has become a bit exclusive. other bars in accra are champs in paloma or ryans irish bar. generally people are friendly. driving will drive you mad if you are not aggresive enough, as most cars used by locals ar only fir for the scrap heap. so be assertive and have eyes 360 on your head. best pool to go was la palm hotel as it was niceand big and i helped build it. golden tulip is nice as well as labadi beach hotel.if you get a house on its own mak sure you have security, a back up generator and back up water tanks, power abnd water were always an issue there.

hope this helps
