living in guatemala safety

hi,

i will be traveling to guatemala with my husband for a few months to go to spanish language school. we would also like to take a week or two to visit various places around the country. i have been reading, however, that violent crime is on the ride in guatemala and kidnapping is a real danger.

can people who live there tell me how to avoid these dangerous situations?

also, do you feel safe living there?

i hear arriving at the airport is very dangerous, as there have been many robberies of people just arriving into the country...

I travel to guatemala at least once a year and never had a problem, avoid going out at night if you plan to visit poor areas. It sound worst than it is, people are very friendly.If you don't want to get sick try eating at nice restaurants when you are in the city.I woud say visit zona 10 or zona viva, great food, night clubs, malls.
