I am keen to rent a house near Lake Atitlan area for New Year, or failing that, in January. Can anybody advise? I'm not very fussy about numbers, or looking for anything particularly smart.

My limited understanding is that you don't hold a title when you purchase land in Guatemala. You do in Costa Rica. I don't know what assurances you have when you purchase land in Guat.. I don't know how you obtain financing, under these circumstances. Obviously there has to be a certain amount of stability, or no-one would be buying.

If someone knows the ins and outs of these things, please fill us in.

We are looking to retire to a community on Lake Atitlan. We do some volunteer work also in Parramos so would like to know which of the villages would be closes to the roads leading to Parramos and how long it might take to drive there.

We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom private home on the lake, we speak very little Spanish but are learning and would like to volunteer in the villages and communities where we would purchase our home.
