Finally someone that can really help you. Isnīt Google just the greatest, I typed in "puta guatemala" which instead of translating into a hate phrase is actually a guatemalan connotation of joy, translating into something like "Guatemala, F-- Yeah!. Yes I know, thatīs just the way we are. Anyways. Sports in Guatemala: Guatemala has like 2 different realities built in one country (people from abroad that visit us will not let me lie on this one) , one of the realities is the Guatemala from "la capital" or the capitol city, which is mostly people ranging from the very poor to upper middle class society (although the very poor from the city and the very poor from the inner land or country side, varies in perception) so we find that for the very poor of the city the most common sport is Soccer, which is played with a hard plastic extruded balloon that comes in bright colors with stripes for a soccer ball, sometimes one of this hard plastic balloons is cut in half but not all the way, just enough to fit in another balloon inside, for protection, because these hard plastic balloons called "la chibola" tends to be punctured very easily ending soccer fun too soon. So this the most common sport played by the poor class, from any age, ever since the toddlers up until when grandpa goes to bed. There is also a common practice in most construction sites, in Guatemala the lunch break usually lasts for an hour, exactly at noon (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM), so construction workers eat their meals mostly consisting of processed salty snacks, sausages, avocados and of course "tortillas" (a round shaped piece of corn dough that is cooked in a pottery plate on top of a fire flame) in the first half of the hour, and on the second half is time for "la chamusca" which is a 30 minute soccer match with 2 teams made of co-workers. And this is in the majority of construction sites that you may find in "la capital" - Guatemala City -. Now for the middle class still of "la capital" the sport remains the same, but what changes is the economic ability of buying a synthetic soccer ball, most of times imported from China. In the upper middle class (upper middle class of Guatemala is like international standard middle class) most of the sports are the ones that are played in dry weather. Basketball: in some areas around municipal markets, basketball courts are built nearby as a public work, usually these public basketball courts can be found not used, because this is not a popular sport in Guatemala (remember that for this sport you need to buy an actual basketball, and a hard plastic balloon could not be used for this sport for bouncing purposes alone). Now for the upper class (which is upper middle class for international standards) the sports vary according to international standards: Baseball and Softball: there are 2 small sized (with international standard compliance) baseball fields the "Enrique Trapo Torrebiarte Baseball Field" in the northern area of the city inside a racecourse called "Hipodromo del Norte", and "Diamante Vista Hermosa" which is located in the eastern part of the city in Zona 15. In the countryside or "area rural" there is basically no practice of baseball or softball, other than hitting a pebble with a stick. Tennis: this is a sport that to be played is required to be part of a Social Club because of the tennis court, there are few tennis courts in Guatemala, and only two public sports camps that contains a tennis facility (Club Deportivo Los Arcos and Campo Marte), the first one is the national public university sports club, and the second is a mid sized facility with many sports courts. And also very rare private tennis courts, mostly inside gated comunities. Fitness Club related sports: Squash, Spinning, Tae-Bo, Aerobics, Pilates, and body culture, are only practiced in private fitness clubs, where memberships costs from a half to one months salary on guatemalan minimum wage. Extreme Sports: this is an even rarely spotted activity, such as Mountain Biking, Mountain Hiking, Sky-diving, only few practicioners amidst Guatemala (because of equipment costs and no sponsorship at all). Water Sports: Guatemala has many lakes, lagoons, rivers, and is bathed by both the Atlantic Ocean with white sand beaches, and the Pacific Ocean with black volcanic sand beaches, so if you want to practice Para-Sailing, Scuba Diving, or Snorkeling you need to head to the Atlantic Ocean and look for the Rio Dulce - Livingston area (a river - Rio Dulce -, a lake -Lago de Izabal- and the caribbean beaches of Playa Dorada, Playa Blanca and Punta de Palma) a few minutes boat ride away is the Cays (wonderful spot for snorkeling). If you are looking for a more intense activity such as Body-Surfing and Surfing, then the Pacific Ocean is for you, with beaches such as Empalizada, Sipacate, Iztapa, Las Lisas and Monterrico, all of them located in the Escuintla area (my hometown), you will find very nice tubes to ride in most of the year since Guatemala only has two seasons, a dry season (OCTOBER-APRIL, JUNE-AUGUST) and a rainy season in the months of MAY and SEPTEMBER. If there is no hurricane or tropical storm around the area on the rainy season it usually starts raining until 2 PM and stops around 6 or 7 PM. So we get a lot of sun hours during the day and throughout the year. Some rivers such as Cahabon, Chiquibul, La Pasion and Usumacinta are fabulous for boating and shooting rapids. There are 4 major lakes in Guatemala with very passive boating activity and some scarce water-skiing, Lago de Amatitlan, Lago de Atitlan (the most beautiful lake in the planet, itīs a lake between 3 volcaones), Lago de Izabal and Lago Peten Itza. Elitist Sports: In the city, there are around six 18-hole golf courses that are considered elitist (an expensive membership required, mostly out of the average guatemalan pocket), also horse-sports are very little practiced (as a sport, because in the countryside most of the personal transportations are still done by horse, mule or any other animal means), so there is very little Polo matches during the year. There is no bullfighting practiced at all in Guatemala, the only bullfighting plaza built in the capitol city was demolished to make way for the extension of the local airport. In the countryside there is no bullfighting at all as well. Rodeo sports: in the countryside you can find a local "Plaza de Toros" which is a poorly constructed Rodeo Ring in most of the towns of regular importance, with horse exhibits from local farmers and some horse races, betting on horses is allowed. Confederate sports: Many of the internationally practiced sports that require a federation are held, federated, regulated and sponsored by the Guatemalan government in the "CONFEDERACION DEPORTIVA AUTONOMA DE GUATEMALA" - www.confede.org -, basically for international competition, such as boxing, swimming, athletism, track & field, cycling and others. As far as cycling is concerned there is an annual held activity called "La vuelta Ciclistica a Guatemala" which is like our own "Tour de France", many competitors from around the world come to compete, this is privately sponsored by the local monopoly of beers "Cerveza Gallo", which is our local lager beer. I hope I cleared a bit of the way for you, and Iīm always very eager to talk about my country. Itīs just that I love this little piece of land, and my "paisanos". • Page 1 (Original Post) • Page 2 (Newest Replies) •
