HiI'm considering taking a position as an academic at the University of Guyana. I know little about the country though I've been doing a lot of reading up. I'd like to know 1st hand though what it's like to live there, safety, what it's like for kids, schools, health, cost of living and any other knowledge or advice would be very gratefully received..thank you!

After living in NY for 20 years, I return to Guyana to live there for a while. It was nice living there for the first couple of months, the simple life; its was almost like taking a step back in time but then reality hit me hard.Guyana has frequent blackouts, dirty water, very corrupted police, not safe at all, too many robberies and shootings, also shabby public services. 911 services??? good luck with that. Despite all the advertising of a few hotels and other catchy attractions, everything feels run down. Guyana is where I'm from and I am not ashamed to tell things how I saw them to be. I'm giving you my honest opinion; I speak from my own experiences. After nine months of living there I gladly returned to NY. If you have kids and live in a developed country, please stay there because they need good education and medical facilities to secure a healthy future...Going to bed at night without the feeling that someone might kick down your door, priceless.
