Hi!

Just acquired 2 hectares of (mainly) olive trees in good condition on a hillside near Ostuni, Puglia. Also some nut trees, figs, pomegranates etc. Need to know how best to manage the land - terracing, olive management (including harvesting and oil), veggie patch maintenance, etc. Will be resident for part of the year, so local, reliable contacts essential. Anyone out there with experience of land management 'from a distance'?

Hi Tony,

I 've got a siilar situation with 5 Hectares in Sicily, The good news is that it's not too much hassle. If you have an automatic watering system It's even better. We have our land rotavated 2 times per year, Autumn and spring (100 Euro per day 4 days each time including machine and gas). Olives need picking around St lucia (November-ish) but just watch your neighbours) Picking takes us about 4 days (300 trees), although you can alow someone else to pick your olives and give you a proportion of the oil. The olives will keep for aboput a week (whatever the locals may tell you) and when you have collected them all then take them to the local press, it ends up costing about 50 eurocents per litre
