I have recently taken early retirement. I am in the fortunate position of receiving a good pension, and when I sell the house, having a decent capital sum. I am married to a Jamaican and I have lived in Jamaica in the 70s. I am planning on moving from the UK, and I am considering returning to Jamaica. The weather, the local food, and the people all make this appealing.

My only issue is crime. I witnessed violent crime when I lived in Jamaica (New Kingston) and Jamaican friends here in the UK and in Canada have all advised against retiring to Jamaica.

I will probably ignore all the advice and go with my heart, but it is truly a shame the reputation that Jamaica has gotten. I also believe that much of this is not generated solely by crime in Jamaica, but by the criminality of Jamaicans living overseas. Again, a real pity given that this is a minority of Jamaican youth, but very visible minority because of their behaviour.
