I lived in Jamaica in the 70s and married to a Jamaican national. I have now taken early retirement and have considered Jamaica to live. Cost of living, climate all are excellent. The trouble is crime. We have relatives living in Jamaica who are very worried every time they go outside, there exists a sense of insecurity whenever we have visited, and frankly, with 4 daughters who would visit us, I would worry for their safety. I have discussed this with Jamaicans here in the UK and in Canada where I used to live, and they all have considered retiring in Jamaica, but wouldnt because of the crime. No point in the Jamacian Tourist Board brushing it under the carpet, it is real and is the number one concern of tourists and retirees alike. Pity really.
