edited and expanded version of the original. I am now 71 years old and I would like reconnect with Latvians on a variety of fronts and issues, historical & current. Born n 1936, I was involuntarily removed to Germany in 1944, orphaned and relocated to the US in 1949. Additional bio.on request.
I have revisited Latvia after its renewed independence and in general have informed myself of the goings on over the past 15 years. I am fully the aware of the wonderful changes that have taken place. However, on the whole, the backward mentality reflected in the handling of several domestic and international issues has been disappointing. After centuries of suffering degradation under German Baltic barons and Czarist Russia, followed close upon by Nazi and Soviet subjugation, I would think that we can recognize the dangers of dogmatism, religious or ideological. In this age where sects of barbaric Islam are imposing their frightful sway over governments and civil societies, do Latvians really have to espouse an american form of right-wing Christian self-righteousness? In foreign affairs, I only hope that the remaining TWO Latvians in the" Coalition of the Willing" satisfies the "debt" to the US.
I'm ready to enter into dialogue with most responses. Thanks.
How bout some authentic Latvian recipes?
