I'm very close to heading to Monrovia for who knows how long for a job but things have sort of hit a snag on the home front. My wife and I found out yesterday morning that she is pregnant with triplets!!!My problem is obviously what to do with my family. Before the triplet news, my wife and I were just going to live apart with trips as often as possible. How would Monrovia be for a new family? I'd hate to pass up the job as I would financially be able to take very good care of my family with it, and my wife would not have to work. What is the housing market like? I’ve looked around on the net and can’t really find anything of any relevance. Any information etc. that you could pass on would be great. Thanks in advance, Michael

Michael, Monrovia for a family is a bit hectic. Healthcare is the biggest snag. Moving higher up in the country (about 200 miles), you will get a town called Gahnpa (ganta). Housing is much better, and health care is better. If the travelling distance to Gahnpa is to far for you, try to get a place in Monrovia close to the UN base. Hope you come right. rgds, Mark

Don't move to Liberia, find a job, care for your wife and young family. Housing in Liberia is NOT cheap. If you want to live by American standards with your young wife and triplets, be prepared to pay as much as $3000 a month in rent, another $300 a month in feul to feul electric generators, another $400 a month for clean drinking water, not to mention food and transportation. This is what the life of an expat in Liberia entails. So unless your employer is going to be paying so you can save your money as most expat hope to do, don't come to Liberia. Now you can always lower your living standards and live in Liberia like the local population for $1 per day. That will get you a shak and you can eat rice once a day with a local stew from the local cookshop. The shak will not be in Mamba point where all the expats want to congregate, but will likely be in chukbor, somewhere in Logantown with the rest of the folks who fully understand the plight of Liberia. So God has blessed you with a loving wife and three newborn babies, stay in America with them and care for them instead of trying to move them to Liberia, and hope to maintain and American standard of Living. Good luck.

Hi, I am not a expat, but am going to Monrovia for two months. Can someone advise on where I should look for apartments? Also, if you know of any available? I am looking for a modest, secure and clean place, close to the Ministry of Health. I don't mind sharing living space and kitchen, with others, but would like private bedroom and bathroom. I am leaving at the end of May, so need to know soon. Any help will be appreciated! -Marcia • Page 1 (Original Post) •
