Hi Mercy,

I love Liberian foods also. And I too am Liberian. I am so hooked on our foods that every time I try to go on a diet to lose weight (which means cutting out rice and oil), I fail.

Now I try to limit the amount of rice I eat and eat my meals early in the afternoon so that I can work it off. Then I eat something light in the evenings. It works.

I live in an apartment and we have 2 Liberian refugee families who live downstairs. They are very nice and we like them, but its their cooking that is killing us. I am not trying to be rude, but the smells make me gag to the point, I've come very close to throwing up while going down stairs to go outside. Everyone who comes to visit us say the same thing. There is an empty apartment next door and it has not been rented in almost a year due to the smell when prospective tenants come to see the apartment. I know our landlord does know realize this. I do not want to be rude and tell him/complain.

I am more curious, what is it that they are cooking? The smell lingers for hours and hours.

We've also had Middle Eastern neighbors and her cooking was wonderful, very strong smell but good and also tasted wonderful. I do not have a weak stomach that I can't handle odd smells but this is just not right. Any ideas on what it is and what can be possibly be done, in a polite way? I do not want them to fee alienated or feel they have to move. Thanks
