Hi. I am moving to Luxembourg from DK over the summer. I shall be teaching at EU School of Luxembourg. I should like to find an apartment of 2 bedrooms as my adult cildren/friends will be visiting regularly.Which are the best places to live?
I shall be visiting the city for a few days around 4 June. Which touchdown points (regarding apartments) are the best as my sister and I only have the few days and would like to avoid just wandering around aimlessly!
What is the most reliable furniture storage place in the City..which will also move my furniture into my apartment when I find it.
Other practical info is very welcome.
Tak på forhånd.
Hello Sofiero.
I know how you feel, I am moving to Lux from the UK with my family in around a month's time and have just come back from a frantic 3 days trying to find somewhere to live.
I'm sorry I can't give you expert advice on areas as I don't know myself. One thing I did find though, is that it was essential to plan the visit ahead and set up appointments to see properties in advance. Most properties for rent are listed on a website called athome.lu. The only problem with officially advertised properties is that you pay a hefty fee to the estate agent, usually one month's rent, which is very expensive, as well as two or three months rent as a deposit.
The other thing we found when looking at properties in outlying villages is that they may look close, but can be quite a nasty drive. We were also very grateful for the satnav we bought specially to help us find the properties.
I would also advise you to set up an appointment with a bank, so you can open an account and get their agreement to fund your deposit through a bank guarantee (which avoids handing around 4, 000 Euros in hard cash to your landlord).
After all that, it seems hard to find anywhere ideal, most rental properties have at least one drawback and we have had to compromise. Also avoid accidentally speaking to more than one estate agent about the same house, as if you rent it you could find yourself paying two fees! We may have done this accidentally and may not now be able to rent the house we preferred.
Will you be teaching at Lux 2 ? I visited it with my daughter on Wednesday. She was tired and miserable but was rescued by some really nice Danish kids (aged around 6 or 7), and their teacher (also Danish) was very nice as well. I expect you will meet her if you are teaching there.
Best wishes,
Linda
