I recently saw a webpage that was promoting Malaysia as a great location for retirement. The claims of low cost of living, low crime rate, exellent infrastructure, easy immigration rules, etc made it sound very attractive. Anyone living there that can give some first hand insight?

Hi Angela,Stumbled upon your post while surfing. I'm a Malaysian, born and grew up here. I can tell you that this is truly a wonderful country, peaceful and warm. If you would like to know more, I can get your more information. In fact, my neighbour is an expat having the same name as yours and she is loving it. By the way, where are you from and what intentions or plans do you have? Best Regards Rodney Looi

Its a multi racial country. Living in the cities you get everything that Singapore has but less expensive. Living in smaller towns, its cheaper. Travelling from North to South by driving takes 7 hours via highways with tolls. Cost of living: Heavy Breakfast RM4.00, Heavy Lunch + Juice RM9.00, Heavy Tea time RM 4.00, Heavy Dinner + Juice RM 10.00 and Supper RM 5.00.We Malaysian eat hell of a lot. There are stalls, shops everywhere and every time is food. Even McDonalds is 24/7. Cities Rent a room Rm300 per month, towns RM300 the whole house. No guns, only the government has it and the underworld drug dealers. Death to all drug peddlers. You can't find gunshops and very limited shooting range. Even rich people can't get guns. Excellent schools and hospitals. English widely spoken. Imagine Malaysian nurses can easily migrate to Australia, just pass the IELTS tests. That's quality. Learn more for those interested. Especially the British, UK the senior citizen should just sell their London home and live in Malaysia. Small homes in London cost 1 million pounds that's RM 7 million. Can live like kings and queens with full servants in Kuala Lumpur, balance of monies put into unit trust. Australia to KL cheap flights coming very soon estimated RM 1, 200 return.

I lived in Malaysia in the 70s, have been back and what a change! Modern living with still that quaint quality of innocence. However watch out that the friendly person who wants to help you isn't after your money. KL is unreconizable from the 70s. Prices for apartments in KL vary from good to staggering expensive, infrastructure is not the best but is a better than the rest of Asia (aside from Singapore). Food prices are fantastic as is the food. I don't think there is better food in Asia or many other places in the world. Coffee money (bribary) is common and in some circumstances can speed up official processes markedly. Medical services for those that can afford to pay are good, not so good in public hospitals. The east coast is worth looking at if you want to retire to paradise, Sabah and Sarawak also look good. Real estate prices are pretty good all over Malaysia. However KL is pretty good and there are all the mod cons westerners are used to including peak hour traffic jams! Good luck if you intend retiring there, I hope to join the expat community soon.

My advice to all check out this Malaysian newspaper online. www.thestar.com.myIf you intend to stay in Malaysia as My Second Home Programme, you need a sponsorship of some sort. This can be foud in the Star newspaper. This sponsorship is different from the Australian method. Once your application is successful your passport will have a 10 year open visa, go and come as you wish. Another solution is to checkout the Malaysian Expatriat Magazine. Lots of very pertinent info. Do a search to get the website and they might be listed in the Star online newspaper also.

Hi allNice to be here, I would like to know whether 18500 RM per month, after tax is good salary and can I survive with my wife a kid with a decent savings, also please someone let me know whether there are any Indian schools around. Thanks and Regards

Dear Raj, At RM18, 500 per month is lots of money to live in Malaysia. In fact its TOO MUCH. Rental and food is cheap in Malaysia. Unless you are living in very posh areas. Normal very secure living with good infrastructure rents at Rm1000 per month. If your wife is cooking and occasionally dine out as a family you would be spending around RM1, 500 per month for the whole family. We have Government primary and secondary schools. Private International schools are very expensive, might as well directly send your kid to Australia and study. Dont worry about racism or bianess in Malaysian schools. You can see the 3 major races, Malay, Chinese and Indians all over the schools. Surprisingly, the Chinese schools that teaches in mandarin has increased yearly intake of Malays amd Indians. Meaning more and more Malays and Indians are learning Mandarin at Chinese schools. Chinese schools are very strict in discpline, first on teachers next on students. Extra monies, invest in Unit Trust operated by Public Bank under Public Mutual. They are the number ONE TOP Mutual Fund Experts In Malaysia. Returns from 15% to 60% based on time and duration. Take care.

I have recieved an offer leter from one of the biggest Private company in Banting. For me they are giving me a fully furnished accomadation in cyberjaya & tax free monthly salary of 18500 RM. I have two kids studying in primary school. I would like to know more on cyberjaya, does this town is having any good indian school. Where Indain expats staying in Cybejaya preferred to send there childrens to schools. For me child education is most important for me to take decision to accept the offer or not. I have seen through internet that Internation school fees is in range of 2500 to 3000 RM per month, which will be too high for me. Regards
