Hi

I am from South Africa. I own a small business here. I have been considdering selling the business and moving abroad. My wife and I visited Malaysia a few years back and have been in love with your country and people ever since. What opportunities does Malaysia offer people like us? Would it be difficult for us to buy an existing small retail business and settle over there?

Hello all,

Nice to meet you and I hope I can find good friends and a lot of useful information here.

I plan on moving privately to Malaysia (Oops! I have my first problem. Is it Malaya or Malaysia?) in September 2008. Will be in Penang from June 5th to 8th on a fact finding mission. Any information concerning what areas are very beautiful and not overcrowded would be a great help.

When I look at the websites about Penang most hotels seem to be skyscrapers. Really I am looking for a small comfortable hotel with only a few rooms but a swimming pool and home cooking restaurant. Anyone have any ideas?

Also I came across the Homepage of "Alter Domus" sounds like a good thing, anyone had experience with this organisation?

Thanks for any help anybody can give.

Tony

Please can someone help me with an idea of cost of living, schools, food, utilities and housing. What would be an average monthly cost for normal/comfortable living.

Thank you

Hi

I read the many emails inquiring about the cost of living in Malaysia

I am a Malaysian birn and would like to advise all of you who wish to come to this beautiful country that

(a) Living in Kuala LUmpur is NOT cheap

(b) Decent residential properties in relatively good neighbourhoods will not be "cheap"

(c) Fees in private schools will be steep

Please do your homework before coming over so that you can enjoy your stay here

If some of the expenses are borne by your employer, yes then it will be easier for you to manage in KL.

The intention of this email is to make sure that your stay in Malaysia will be one full of lovely memories

Don't worry about medical facilities, children's facilities, shopping, utilities etc - everything is available here for a price. We have some world class facilites which can be vouched by visitors

My advice to you is simple - do your homework.

And to those who do come to our shores - WELCOME!

Reply #44 Bubba from deep in your mind (Contact Member) -

Why not give some example prices. You say something is "not cheap". However, for one person a $500/mo apt would cheap. For another it would be expensive. The same would for for a $5, 000/mo apt.

It would be a lot more useful to know that an apartment in a decent area would cost roughly... ?
