Hi

So many questions in this link and so few answers...

So here's what I know....

Cost of living will depend very much of course on your lifestyle and whether you have a fmaily or not.

As a single person, a comfortable living could be made on about RM6000-9000 per month. For instance very comfortable funrnished accomodation say an apartment with three bedrooms can be had for about RM3000 to Western ex-pat tastes. One of the best places to look for accomodation is either The Star property pages which can be found on the internet or iProperty again a search on the internet will pick this up.

Eating out, again depends on tastes, but the road-side stalls that are very popular amongst Malaysians, you can eat for as little as RM10. Then again, there are some very good restaurants in town that will charge RM100 and above for very good food, i.e. in the hotels. Water bills etc. are very cheap, perhaps RM150 a year and electricity is reasonable as well. Your landlord will pay for DBKL half-yearly fees and also maintenance fees if there are any.

With a family, you will need to add school fees to this, and again international school fees can range from about 1500 p/m to significantly more - there is loads of information on these schools on the internet, the two most well known british curriculum schools in KL would be Garden International and Alice Smith.

Despite all of this, if you stuck to the very basics in KL, you could rent something significantly smaller at say RM1000 but you are not going to get ex-pat standard housing. For those with a much larger budget, places in town in some areas will go for RM10000 plus per month.

You really do need a car in Malaysia, and be aware that unless you are with the MM2H program 'foreign' cars come with a heavy tariff particularly with the costlier models. Malaysians do hold a nice car as a badge of having made it and will often pay more for their cars than for their accomodation. The more expensive models like BMWs etc can cost 3 to 4 times their usual prices in other countries. Petrol is relatively cheap although it has recently been hiked, and even more recently reduced again, but it is very favourable when compared with Europe and America. Itis about a third of the cost of say the UK, at about RM 2 per litre - which is about 60cents.

Well hope that's useful.

As what Phil in earlier post said, cost of living varies depending on your needs and comfort of living you wish to attain here. Are you here for work posting for a duration, say 4 years OR are you looking to settle down, with your family, say wife and 2 small kids.

I would say Malaysia has higher cost of living compared to Vietnam, Indonesia & perhaps Thailand (as a whole) & lesser than Singapore nevertheless.

Food

As multi-racial country, with majority comprised of Muslims, Chinese & Indian the choices are abundance. Restaurant (shops) with Chinese stalls, Indian or Malay food normally cost RM5 - 10 for a basic meal, depending on location. Fast food restaurants such as Mc D' & KFC are also plenty. A meal for 1 would normally cost between RM10++. Of course fine dining, Western cuisine, posh places will be more expensive.

Accomodation

It all depends on location, generally. If the capital town KL or close areas, large town such as Penang will be more costly compared to other states/ town. Cyberjaya / Putrajaya is approx 45 mins from KL center but its a highly developed township with many governmental offices.

I would say a simple 3 bedrooms condo in KL area is from RM 400, 000 to 1 mill. Landed properties will be even higher. Te more further away the cheaper will be. Rental would set back from RM800 per unit upwards.

Education

Most of Malaysian sends their child to government school. Education system will be different to most countries as Bahasa M'sia is the main language spoken & based on. English is 2nd language. There are many Private schools in more developed areas especially in around the capital.

Amenities

Government Hospitals & private ones are also plenty. There is a vast price difference between the 2. Not sure about insurance policies for expat. Public transportation may not be the best mode of transporatation (compared to Singapore & Bangkok) if you live further away from town center.

So i would say for a 'comfortable' cost to live in Malaysia would be RM4, 000 to RM7, 000 for a single person. For a family, household income should be RM10, 000 & above.

Hi all, my company has offered me a job in Malaysia and I want to know details of daily life there other than expenses. Do people in general welcome strangers? Which is security level, is it safe to travel around etc?

Thanks in advance for any info!

normal accomodation cost in malaysia for a single person : RM300- RM800 monthly.

normal food expenses (without cooking) : RM400-RM800, depends on lifestyle.

other important/miscellaneous things (other than entertainments): RM100-500.

so i think if salary is more than RM3000 monthly, you can already earn a good living in Malaysia. if more than RM8000 monthly, you are considered wealthy.
