HI I have lived in Mauritius for 15 yrs. If you have school going kids I suggest you live in the north as this is where the best schools are - Northfields for high and IPS for primary school. There are a lot of english speaking expats in the Grand Bay area (Point aux Cannoniers and Calodyne) If you prefer cooler weather then Floreal would be better for you - a lot more British people here. Good english primary here too - Alexandra House. The cost of living is more expensive than South Africa but less than the UK. House rentals are getting more expensive by the day: On the beach - Rs 80, 000 - Rs 100 000 per month. Cheaper inland. Maid service is cheap and plentiful, cars are expensive. Hope this helps!

Well, to rent a house at this price means that you have just hired one which is luxury. Floreal is among the posh regions here so better avoid these areas. The North is gud but it depends also who gets u a villa or house for rent. Im Mauritian, training in Law. Also a Director of an Intellectual Property, Business Outsourcing Company. May be I may help some of u who wud like to come over, like looking for accomodation etc...

Hi JoPlease tell me more about Mauritius. Is it a place one can make a life? Have a career? I am thinking about moving from South Africa to join my partner and I want to be as prepared as I can be. Did you make friends easily? How easily can you find English speaking people? I cannot speak a word of French! Thanks B

Hello Everyone, I am English living currently in London. I studied Fine Art here for my degree and have good skill level and plenty of experience with Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The majority of my working experience since my degree (5 years) has been in marketing, events and pr, concluding most recently with a role as operations manager for an online business network, also encompassing management of the web dev team. I would love to come to Mauritius and am 100% committed to living and working there. I have visited several times and I am under no illusions about how hard life there is for many people. Can anyone help me as I am having a struggle finding out about work that is available there, in particular, suitable work for someone with my skills and experience. Thank you and kind regards to all, Sam.

Accommodation is expensive if you try to negeotiate it yourself.Being an expat will definitely make a disadvantage. In fact, we have been proposing to subcontract the accommodation and instead of paying Rs 80, 000 to Rs 100, 000, we do look for advantageous deals which can turn around 50% less. We send pics of the accommodation for you to have an idea and then we conclude. So anyone wishing to look for accommodation would surely have to consider this option. KURT (kurt77@orange.mu)
