relocating to mauritius

sallyhorace (80.4.224.6) -

Hello all...

We are a family with 3 kids looking to relocate to Mauritius. We have been doing our homework but thought we would ask people out there who have relocated how easy or difficult it really is to get through the red tape. For example we are looking to buy property to live in and maybe rent part of it as a holiday let. Has anyone else done this and is it feesable to do so. Also we have one burning question... what is immovable property and is the IRS as simple as it seems?

We are looking to get citizenship eventually if all goes well so this is a long term life changing decision for us and we want to be armed with all the knowledge we can get!! Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read this and if you have any advice for us please do not hesitate to get back to us as we would be most grateful.

Hi Sally and all

We are in a similar sitution as you and to find advice seems very difficult.

The government site has very limited information and all seems to be aimed at big businesses.

Does anyone else have any idea how a small family can relocate ie buying into small going concern or starting a B & B etc.

Are there any agencys that specialise in relocation/advice.

Hi All,

Pure coincidence landed on this site. I am a native of Mauritius and may be able to answer some of your queries. Yes government is amending the law to allow oreigners to buy property here. The Integragted Resort scheme is luxurious housing designed for the affluent who would not need to rent part of their villa although they could...but to whom - not to the locals i guess as it would not be affordable. Yes citizenship will eventually be granted - this is govt's promise.

I am an engineer and real estate is not my line but i may look up for info or send you links etc, if that may help... Maybe one day we become countrymen who knows!

hello to all. my husband and i would like to retire to mauritus, and would be grateful for any information as to the procedure and requirements that are involved.

in particular, the amount of money we need to bring in, the requirements for a residence permit, are we allowed to buy property and the name and address of the government department through whom we need to apply.

if any could give me details of estate agents web sites, that would also be great.

thanking you in anticipation, lynne casselman

Hi to all. My husband, 3 children and I are emigrating to mauritius in December 07. We have enrolled our children in thier schools over there are they are due to start in Jan. We need to find a house to rent for a while whilst looking to buy. We also intend to set up a business as we are selling ours here in England. My husband owns a garage. My father is Mauritian and I have a Mauritian citizenship I.D card already. My husband can apply for his after 4 years of living in Mauritius & the children automatically get theirs.

My family live in Rose-Hill, but we are looking to rent a 3/4 bedroom house on the west coast (Flic-En-Flac area) with pool.

Can anyone help us???

Sarah........

I am from South Africa although my mother was born in Mauritius (she now lives in SA), and I am looking at emigrating to Mauritius with my wife and kids.

Is it possible to acquire citizenship through "birth", and if so, is there anyone on this board from SA who has gone this route?

If you have any advice or information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am also a school teacher and was wondering about availability of teaching jobs on the island. (At the moment we are in Taiwan teaching English).

Thanks in advance.

Please let me know what the proocedures are for me and my partner, if we are interested in purchasing property in maricius and relocating from South Africa. What are the laws on foreign ownership and how easly would it be to get perminent residence. Are emigrants able to work in your country? are there minimum amounts of money you need to introduce to mauritius on relocation? If there is anyone who can help me with my enquiries please drop me an email. Thanks Rob

Hello

We went to Mauritius in 2006and returned after March 2007. I am Mauritian and living in the Uk with my husband. I don't want to prejudice decisions and give false impressions. The country is paradise when it comes to food, beaches, weather all year round, but it does have setbacks. the cost of living worlwide is affecting all including Mauritius, some of my immediate family are emmigrating to Australia because the cost of living things like dried milk was 120.00rs, nappies 300-400 r.s veg can vary and of course with rice is going to be hard, corn beef was about 78r.s a tin you can expect to pay R.s10.000 then you can expect rent to vary from R.s3000 which was what we were paying it could be more then consider other expenses and corruption in government is not good, unless you have the power to invest but watch your investment you might lose out. My husband couldn't even get work out there. Security is a big issue, but you must choose yourself if you haven't been there go for a holiday first then see for yourself. Don't get me wrong it is a nice place except poverty is doing the usual. All the best in you decisions

Hi there

My family and i went to Mauritius in 03. We wanted our son to get a better education and have a social life. Everything was ok. We built a house in Domaine Du Moulin, Saint Antoine, Goodlands. We built a house to our taste. It has got swimming pool and a German sheperd called Alaska. The house has got everything. My son was going to Northfields School (opposite Ecole du nord). Everything was going well when suddenly i was taken ill and had to come back to the UK where i had a very operation. Now the Doc told me that i can go to Mauritius for holidays but not to live because i am on so many strong painkillers. My husband also has not got the best of health at the moment. I also have my Jaguar S Type. So make a go of things. If anybody out there want to go and settle in Mauritius, you should just go. At the moment i have put my house for sale or rent same things apply for the car. My family and i miss Mauritius a lot and because of our health and medication this is not possible. Life is so beautiful. You feel as if you are living your life to the full. Just go for it!Nobody knows what the futur hold for us. So if there is anybody who is interested in buying a house and/or Jaguar and /or dog can email me on rhangowat@hotmail.com
