My husband and I are moving to Marquette in about 3-6 months. He'll be continuing his education at NMU. I've had a heck of a time trying to find online searches for jobs and other things up that way. Any suggestions? My background is in Immigration (outbound) plus clerical/customer service and his is Chemisty. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, i just moved away from there because there are no jobs... but..if you look up the newspaper www.miningjournal.net you can find the classifieds through hot-ads.com and there are open jobs there. Also, NMU has a great job center website... Good luck, if you find me one too that would be cool...

Hey, I moved away from the U.P. because there are really no jobs up there. I want to move back up there to be around my relatives and I have a baby on the way so I'm looking for a good job I have alot of experience in factory work and being a supervisor. So if you could find me a good job it would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

If you'uns don't have a position lined up already before you arive, you must plan on spending at least 6 months in da U.P. before you can even begin to find a job. It's a bit like Alaska vis-a-vis the employment situation.

Try going on to Michigan Works. They have a talent bank that posts job openings and you can search for those within different mile radius from where you will be in the UP. This is a very helpful resource and so are the people that work there.

Having an extremely hard time finding a job here in Marquette. I have applied to approximately 35 different places, only having 1 interview. Sadly there were 13 other people that were being interviewed right after me making my chances slim at a job that I'm overqualified for.Anyone have any tips? Ive tried the miningjournal.net, newspapers and spent my fair share of time at michigan works.

I lived in Marquette for approx 9 yrs from 1980 to 1980. All 3 of my adult children were born in the area and 2 have moved back close to their father. I would love to returen to the area but as everyone else, the only thing preventing me is the job situation. I have a BA and my work background is child welfare, youth justice and mental health. Particularly Native issues. I just want to get back there, any ideas as to start my job hunting strategy?

"work in the U.P."
We raised my kids in the U.P. and had our own business. After the last kid graduated from H.S. I moved back to Canada and bought another business (pre-9/11). They report Detroit has about 30% unemployment today -- during good times in the U.P. I would bet that was the unemployment rate. It was a nice place to live and have a business but be prepared for reality. I've seen a lot of folks come with only a hope and a dream only to leave within two years with nothing but eyes wide open and a tarnished dream. There is a reason there is so much poverty.....Good luck and get ready for more of the same of wherever you are coming from.

Good question. The answer is there are few jobs up here. Most of the jobs they do have are low pay. you can look in the mining journal newspaper and craigslist. But theres few jobs and they pay peanuts if you are lucky enough to get one.Best bet is to get out there and start looking around town.If you are a RN you probably can get a decent job. Other than that its going to be very difficult to get a good job.You may get lucky and get something at a fast food place or something like that. but really they are not even hiring often. i checked out marquette today and I seen NO HELP WANTED signs.not even one place was hiring not even at taco bell or any of them low paying places. its not easy job finding up here at all~! start praying and looking hard around town because that will be the only way to get a job up here and it probably wont pay much. sorry to put it out there like that but everyone up here knows the deal. its beautiful but its not easy to get work and the winters are long.

my suggestion would be to head down to Greenbay Wi. they are still pretty down there. not as nice as the UP by any means but there are jobs down there. doesnt matter if you have degrees up here.the jobs are just rare and people fight over them.

"Empowering Women"
Greetings to the unemployed professional women in the UP!My husband grew up in Marquette MI; his parents are aging, living in the family home and during the past five years have suffered several critical events. We visit Marquette frequently and to this day have a number of very good friends there as well. I am aware of the employment challenges in the area. Living in Minneapolis MN, both of us with very successful jobs, living the executive lifestyle but maintaining our down to earth, frugal and personal nature, we agreed family was most important. I was immediately recruited to a new position in Appleton which only lasted 15 months. I then took a "career sabbatical"! You have heard the phrase, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade". I was not unemployed, I was given an opportunity to reflect, discover, learn and think outside the box! I learned I needed to create my own opportunity. Because I made one little effort to reach out via a networking (similar to this), I made a new friend AND found an awesome opportunity! I get to have fun, make money and exercise my natural leadership skills. I have everything I found during my sabbatical I was looking for! Are you unemployed waiting for a job to find you, OR are you on a career sabbatical, reflecting on your best skills, what you want in life, who you are, how you are going to proceed faced with the current economic challenges? If you are on sabbatical, I want to tall you all about what I am doing today. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
