I am a mid 60's, healthy, divorced male retiree here in south west Florida who has had it with the expensive lifestyle here. Am intent on finding my ideal retirement haven in C. America. Have eliminated some areas; Costa Rica, ( getting way too expensive with crime increasing exponentially ); Honduras, ..a depressing pigstye is all I can say ); and Panama, (ho hum, indifferent, blase' natives). My one trip to Nicaragua in July, 2001 however, has inspired me to ask of those out there who have visited various towns there, .. "What are the top three places you would advise as an ideal spot to retire to ?" My priorities are simple, ..not too far from the ocean/large river; a town of at 5, 000 - 20, 000; a variety of bars, cantinas, resorts, etc, where I could occassionally meet a senorita or two. I don't want to isolate myself, need a variety of things to do. Does anyone recommend the San Juan River area of se Nicaragua, ..on the Costa Rican border ? Or Granada ? Where oh where ? ( smile )

Senor Don Jose, if you do not want to isolate yourself, please do not waste your time looking at the Rio San Juan area of Nicaragua. There is nothing there, except cocodrillos and the El Castillo fortress, and a few adventurous touristas that will wander through. Managua would be my choice, ..mucho muy linda senoritas.

Nicaragua is the worst place you can go for anything. Corruption is everywhere you go, thieves all over the place, the senoritas you want to meet will only get your wallet empty. If you buy land, it will be taken away from you. Simply put, stay away from this warn, corruption torn country.

If you are interested in the beach, than I would recommend San Juan del Sur. If you like colonials - than Granada. Some people retire where it is cooler up in the mountains. It's really just seeing what spot you would like. San Juan del Sur and Granada offer a lot of amenities not found elsewhere in the country (great & cheap international cuisine). There are also a fair amount of expats, which is nice. The nice thing about San Juan del Sur is that there is a great mix of retirees as well as young adventurous folks & surfers!

new to this forum. We are asking the same questions about Nicarauga, is it relativly safe?(no place is totally safe, not even Ala!)Been to Mex., Costa Rica, and Panama.anyone out there with some honest opinions, and not just burned by a bad experience? We will listen to all responses, good and bad. We are leaning toward San Juan del sur, to spend some time this Dec. to check it out. Are we safe in taxi's, walking down a street, sitting on a beach? We never experienced one bad thing in the other countries we traveled.Hoping to hear back soon, and hoping to make new aquaintances to correspond with before we travel. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
