I am a Nigerian returnee after 15yrs in the US. All i have to say is if the job offer is from multinationals like Shell, you are definitely in safe hands. Your salary like most salary offers to expats are out of this world. You will not spendmost of it in Nigeria, because most of your expenses will be taken care of: housing, transport, domestic helps etc.The bulk of the average Nigerian families' expenses (about 40%)is spent on energy. Crazy but you'll see when u get there. Since ur accomodation and transport will be taken care of, you have no problem. A family of 4 can easily will spend roughly about 200, 000- 350, 000 naira a month depending on how simple or how much of the highlife they want to live. To save money, buy ur food in bulk and eat in. A good dinner at a decent restaurant with a bottle of wine for 2 will cost you about 15000- 20000 naira ($115-$153). So if u eat out alot, u will spend a lot on 'entertainment'. Take this analogy- A crate of coke (24bottles)- N800 (33.3)per bottle Bottle of coke on the street- N60 Bottle of coke in decent restaurant- N120 Bottle of coke in Sheraton abuja- N200 The dollar is currently 1 to N130, so u can also do some math. The biggest problem i encountered moving back is dealing with a percieved notion your high financial status because ur an expat. This is true of course, so u have to be careful in how u handle and display ur money. If u give the impression 'da money is flowing' u will pay quadruple anytime you want spend money. a good rule of thumb- never delegate financial things if u can help it. Because u will have a driver, cook and nanny (if u have kids)people tend to get lazy. Delegate purchases only when you are buying from formal settings like a supermarket. U may not alway check ur reciept, but it keeps people on their toes. - With informal purchases, always haggle and half the price of whatever the offer is to be begin your negotiation. -Sit in the back seat of your assigned car (especially women) not infront with your driver to subtly underscore who the boss is. Be nice, but keep boundries with domestics especially the Nigerian ones. They tend to see kindness and generousity as a a weakness that should be exploited. Abuja can be tranquil, it is pretty much a new city and so infrastrcture is generally good. think Washington DC- i.e government town. Finally, should u take the offer? Of course, silly. I thought u left already!!

Hi, I am moving to Abuja, Nigeria very soon. I have previously lived in Ghana where I was very involved in the "British Womens Club.' Is there anything along these lines in Abuja to meet new people and keep me busy?

Apparently, I am a student at american university of kuwait.I so your expat posting in nigeria, some how i will not call my self an expat, but i like to draw the attention of some nigeria our country is good, no wahala but we are very desperate to leave the country.Kuwait is not for student, very expensive even for a worker talkless of student studying in a private school.House rent no cheap, food no cheap, transfort and life style no good.My advise is better for you to go to america, london the life will be more easier to you.Kuwait has no mercy, even if you are a worker is very hard for you to survive, be careful nigerians.SALISU MAINASARA GUSAU.

The most important thing to check for all job seekers is the validity of the offer. There are a lot of people in West Africa that make email ids using biggest corporate names. The catch - they are made on free to public domains like Yahoo / Hotmail, etc. No well established company will NOT have its own web account. If you notice, most of the job offers ask you to send a certain amount for your visa processing (re-imbursable after you move in) and you may never hear anything about this money sent by you. There may be more, but this is what I could make out. Overall, atleast the email ids will have to be genuine if it is an actual offer. You must always check back before proceeding further, and even before you set your expectations for this kind of a salary.
