I'm very interested in learning more about Niuean art and design. Currently Samoan, Togan & Fijian designs are printed just about on anything. Do we have designs that are only unique to Niue? What do they look like?

Half Niuean, half English, I found this site with Google and I tend to agree with Aquilar Luki in that we don't appear to have accessibility to Niuean art, design, or tattoos.

I'm a Niuean artist operating out of Tauranga, NZ.

I have been tattooing for some time now and have done many polynesian/Maori tatau. I can do Niuean as well...many of the motifs are taken from Hiapo and I have created new ones too.

In celebration of Niues Constitution Day, Artstation will be exhibiting 'Pule fakamotu' from October 8th-25th 2008. A group exhibition co-curatored by contemporary Niuean artists Cerisse Palalagi and Zora Feilo. 'Pule fakamotu' which means to lead and take charge of your own affairs, brings togeather Auckland based Niuean artists who will explore the theme of Niuean self-governance, with printmaking, painting, photography, multi media and weaving.

Writer/Photographer and co-curator Zora Feilo, who will be exhibiting her photography with poetry from Niue to New Zealand, says, "It is essentially a celebration of Niuean people coming together and honouring our identity”. With participating artists from contemporary mediums like moving image from Janet Lilo along side traditional weaving from Molly Pihigia, 'Pulefakamotu' will be a rich display of past and present voices for this small pacific island community.

Regarding any traditional & original niuean designs. There is also another very very talented toa by the name of Kenneth Green you can contact. I was in Niue recently & one of the things I wanted to find was someone that knew about the history of Niuean art & designs.

Like many of you I felt that I needed to express who I was & my culture more. To represent & be a vessel of Niue art & culture and to also acknowledge my grandparents & my heritage.

After locating Ken through your typical Niue Island way of asking around, he was very generous in allowing me to have some of his precious time, away from his busy business to speak.

Since return from home, Ken has worked a uniquely detailed Niuean design that he has so kindly allowed me to have as my own. When I opened it I instantly felt very emotional. Because the design was so detailed, tradtional & unique in every sense of the word.

I am now looking around for the right person to put it on me. I will post a picture somewhere when this is done.

I lived there from 1994-2006. I know how that island 'clicks'.

Seems like most of the posts on here are from people asking of Niuean Tattoo designs.. I too, have searched the internet for tattoo designs for myself and for my partner who is Maoli. We have a 6 month old daughter and we're trying to fuse both Niuean and Maoli designs together.

I think you just need a good artist to capture what your idea for a "Niuean" tatt is, cause the designs I've found for Niue are really basic.

Roger's tattoo parlour in Wellington, has a guy there who does pretty mean Maori designs freestyled. But hes told me that what ever I have in mind for a design he'd be happy to draw it out and see if I'd like it....

But it would really help if there were actual Niuean designs up on the net, I might ask my bro if I could load up his to the net as an example of a Niuean design. He's got a tattoo of an Unga wrapped down his arm fused with Raro designs symbolising his partner. But his design was freestyled.
