A New Twist on Social Engagement; Applying the Deming Management Method To begin with I'll give a very brief outline of what the Deming management method is all about and then we can discuss how that might relate to social engagement. The underlying concept of the Deming management management is that everyone should be involved in the process. In order words, even the "lowest" level of workers can sometimes offer the best insight on how to improve the processes in your business.Of course, it is a simple yet brilliant method of management. A system that continuously improves all your business processes. Now apply that same concept to your social networking and you'll be able to have some truly exciting social engagement. Who better to talk about your products and services than those actually building them and/or designing them. Or, for example, Chevron recently posted a very boring press release on their facebook page about an oil spill in Brazil. It was really dry and boring and of course resulted in various anti-Chevron, anti-whatever kind of comments as excepted. The two groups are at completely opposite sides of the spectrum, not communicating, and accomplishing nothing. Chevron being dry and corporate and the commentators being classic protesters. The result being that I doubt anyone was paying attention to any of it. What if, instead of publishing some dry, sanitized corporate press release, Chevron has instead, had some of those involved at the spill site, interacting, in an open and honest manner? Now, I bet that could have drawn some attention. Oh, yes, I hear all the screaming from Chevron that they have to control the flow of information to protect their business interests. Of course, that is not what social networks, or social engagement is about. It is about the exchange, not control of information! Now, I suspect for most of my readers here, damage control relating to serious disasters like this is not part of your social networking experience. But, ponder for a moment though, how much more interesting and enlightening it would be for "real people" doing "real things" in your business to interact socially. No control of information, just let them express their individual personalities and bring your products and services to life for real. Combine that with an enhanced Deming Management theory where you not only truly involve your employees in the management process, but bring the social network in too!
