WESTERN MARTIAL ARTS

Free Scholars Kirk Lawson and Mark Rainey, in association with Cumann Bhata, are forming a Western Martial Arts study group

Officially recognized as Cumman Bhata Dayton Study Group, the areas of study include: Irish Shillelagh, Mendoza Pugilism, English Quarterstaff, Military Sabre, Cutlass, Singlestick, Bowie Knife, Tomahawk, Spear, and Longsword

Irish Shillelagh study focuses on the Faction Fighting / Bata method taught by Ken Pfrenger, composed of period sources including Percy Longhurst and the anonymous “Boxing” text. The English Quarterstaff focuses on the method taught by Paul Wagner drawing from period sources such as Silver and Wylde. Military Sabre focuses on 19th Century English-American Military Sabre and is quite different from modern Sport Fencing. Sources for Military Sabre include Alfred Hutton, Richard Burton, U.S. Army Saber manuals and many other texts.
