Hi AllI have been offered a job in Ruwi with a salary of RO 1200 per month. I need to rent an apartment or flatshare and get a car. Can anyone give me an idea as to the cost of living, renting, food, drink and socialising? I would also like to join a beach club such as the InterCon or Crowne Plaza – does anyone have any views on these places? Are there any expats out there that have recently moved to Muscat that can give me any advice and dos/donts? Is there a big expat network out there – I very much want to fit in and make friends easily! Any tips would be much appreciated as soon as possible – I have to give the company my decision soon!! Many thanks – H Trackbacks

Hi H, My wife and I, along with our three children recently moved to Muscat. I don't know if it is too late to give you some informaton but here goes anyway. A salary of 1200 is reasonable if you are single ie you can live fairly well as long you are not paying a mortgage at home for example. The cost is living is not very high but rising. The Omanis are a wonderful people, probably the friendliest in the Middle East! The country is very beautiful but you must love the Sun! It gets very hot in the summer (50C) so be prepared for that. Muscat is a small city and very pleasant for families but I do heat the odd complaint from single people that they prefer the nighlife in Dubai :) However, most people find it a very relaxing city to live in, and relatively crime free. All in all it depends really on your personality, but if you are looking for somewhere to relax then there are few better places. However, the work hours can be long depending on the job, sometimes 6 day weeks are normal. Often there is a middat break between 1 to 4 and then work until 8pm or more. Both Intercon and Crowne Plaza are beautiful, I prefer Crowne Plaza for the beach. Plenty of good nightclubs, drink is a little pricey. Restaurants are very good. In fact you can eat quite well cheaply in the local spots. If you are a single woman it is a little bit more difficult socially as locals are not so used to foreign women, but you will be fine in the shopping centres, bars etc. Thats about it, best of luck ...
