Hi All, I recently relocated to Muscat, Oman from India. I see that a lot of you are concerned about the cost of living.. how it is to live here.. etc.. so here is my opinion. I am a management professional working for one of the bigger software companies in Oman. COST OF LIVING: 1. Accommodation: Accommodation is these days very expensive these days. A single bedroom apartment in better parts of the cities costs as much as RO 250. Double bedroom costs as much as RO 350 to 400. Try to purusade your company to give you accomodation. 2. FOOD: Good food is available in plenty.. whatever your taste is. Continental, Turkish, Lebanese, Indian, Junk food chains, etc. About RO 80 a month if you eat all meals out. 3. Transportation: Public transportation is limited to shared taxis and what are known as Baise buses. They are priced reasonably but availability is poor. You definitely need a car in the long run. Again, try to negotiate a contract that includes a car. 4. Alcohol: You need permit to buy liquor from liquor stores. Liquor is served in select restaurants and bars in 5* hotels. ALL IN ALL if you are not really the party type but want to live a comfirtable life as a BACHELOR your monthly expense is about RO 200 (excluding travel and accomodation). For a family of 3 expect about RO 250-300 if you cook at home.

I agree with Kash, Oman has become really expensive as of late. It seems to have become worse since Cyclone Gonu, putting land on high ground usually more expensive neighborhoods at an even higher premium. Apartments in MQ or anywhere really nice around lots of expats are going to run at an even higher premium than what Kash has mentioned - Perhaps around 400 or higher per month - for a couple of bedrooms. Right now, I'm leasing a 3 bedroom villa in Al Khuwair for 1000 per month (company is paying for most of it) - and that's cheap. A similar villa in Qurum would run around 1500. Houses are cheaper out by the airport and past the airport. Dining out is expensive and limited in selection. There is one half way okay Mexican restaurant that makes a decent margarita, you just have to get used to the Indian chefs hiding curry in your enchiladas. Local fare is always available and inexpensive, but how many shawarmas can a man eat for goodness sake? Your best bet is to cook at home. Maids can be hired for an inexpensive amount. There are part time maids who are already in the country and full-time, which require sponsorship and importation from the Far East. For what it costs you to eat out every night, you could hire a maid to cook for you ever morning and evening and clean your house. If you are American and you have a wife, dogs, cats and kids, you need no less than 1000 OMR for a villa. You need about 300 OMR per month for cars for your wife and yourself if you get two reasonably safe new cars (something for comuting to work and perhaps nothing less than an M1 Abrams battle tank for your wife). Food is expensive and it depends on if you are the type that likes steak every night, so I don't know how to value that, excpet to be prepared to pay 6 OMR per person at a reasonably nice restaurant. There are several satellite TV services. Showtime appears to be the best. No cable TV. Broadcast TV is Arabic only. Internet is really slow DSL or almost really slow but expensive broadband wireless (3G from Narwas). Satellite runs about 200 OMR per year plus equipment. Telephone can either be through the telephone monopoly (Omantel) or via cell phone service (which seems to be far more readily available than even the US). 5 OMR will usually get you a SIM card with 5 OMR credit on it.

I am an Indian and have been offered a teaching job in a Private Engg College in Muscat. I have a wife and son studying III class. Can you suggest me the decent pay at Oman/Muscat if (i) acco, car, medical are provided (ii) nothing is provided. I heard school education is free in Oman. Is it free for only Oman nationals or outsiders also. I appreciate your suggestions in this regard.

What is the average salary for a PhD holder in IT should he decide to work for a private college or university? I hear that Oman pays much less than the UAE and Saudi. Is this accurate?Do they usually offer accommodation to potential faculty members? Thanks

Oman and particularly Muscat is a great place to live. Peaceful and friendly. However, Cost of living has risen dramatically over past two years with inflation around 12%. Cost of Accomodation particularly has doubled because of greed and shortage of same, its now almost impossible to get a one bed flat for less than OMR.240pm. Villa's to rent are extremely high from OMR.750pm to 1700pm.Schooling for Indians, Sri Lankans etc is cheap but western expats only have two choices Brit or American school and cost per child can be your salary unless employer is prepared to pay schooling (unlikely unless its Govt.job). Still cheaper in Muscat than in Dubai (UAE) and traffic is less. Oman not a place for teenagers as little to do except beaches. • Page 1 (Original Post) • Page 2 • Page 3 • Page 4 • Page 5 (Newest Replies) •
