EMPLOYMENT HISTORY & WORK EXPERIENCE
The Kennel Club, London
2004 – present Financial Controller
In view of my efforts and the nature of my work over the past couple of years, I was recently promoted to Financial Controller with ten staff reporting in to me. I am currently reviewing a new accounting software system for the club as well as the day to day running of the department.
2002- 2004 Financial Accountant
Reporting to the Finance Director and responsible for the entire Finance Department which is split into the Sales & Purchase ledgers and Fees departments. I had six people reporting in to me and worked on updating all the reporting and financial systems, including the running of the members’ restaurant etc., as the KC systems were quite archaic. As well as the above I project-managed the set-up of a new Direct Debit collection system across four departments as well as dealing with the ’Crufts’ and ‘Discover Dogs’ show accounts and budgets.
Black Cat Holdings Ltd, Richmond Surrey (subsidiary of JWT/WPP)
1998-2002 Company Accountant
I was responsible for all of the below information and had three people working for me. Additionally, I was responsible for the maintenance of the WIP across all the jobs in the agency (ten client-based groups – 80 staff) as well as the complete reporting for the Creative Department (30 staff) and in-house studio (Spitfire). I initiated and set up the Creative department myself, which grew from a 'one man band' to a small 'company' in its own right. I also introduced, installed and continuously monitored a new finance system (Synergist) across three different creative departments as well as the studio.
Black Cat had been a subsidiary of the JWT Group for about a year prior to my departure.
1996-1998 Financial Accountant
After a thorough grounding at the base level and as the company grew in size, I was promoted to Financial Accountant where although I was still essentially concerned with the maintenance of daily cashflow and Purchase and Sales ledgers, it became more of a supervisory role and I was also given an assistant to help with the daily input etc. Additionally I was also given an introduction to the Job Bag (WIP) system as well as the following responsibilities:
· Maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register
· Running of and dealing with all aspects of the Company Car Fleet
· Maintenance and VAT allocations of Expense Forms/Accounts etc.
· Supplier Payments
· Supervision of the Credit Control function and issuing status reports to the board
· Assistance with maintenance of the WIP & monthly management accounts
· Maintenance of Temps/Freelancers register, including Self-Employed status, Confidentiality etc.
· Accruals
· Income forecasts
1995-1996 Assistant Accountant
Reporting to the Financial Director of a (then) small advertising agency
· Cashflow maintenance on a daily basis
· Bank Reconciliations
· Maintenance of Purchase and Sales Ledgers
· Credit Control
· Coding and input of Expense Forms
· Maintenance of Petty Cash
· Computer System Maintenance
· Hardware and Networking Support
Sotheby's,London
1991-1992 Assistant Management Accountant
Reporting to the Chief Accountant, working on various aspects of the management accounting function and inter-departmental finances.
· Assistance in the preparation of the monthly management accounts
· Preparations of subsidiary company accounts
· Control of Chairman's personal expense account
· Budgeting Control
· Represented Sotheby's at The Annual Professional Recording Systems Exhibition (Olympia)
· Dealing with all internal and external accounts related queries
· Other Ad Hoc projects
Personal & Technical Skills
Team working: I have always worked as part of a team of between seven to ten people, and have been successful at maintaining a healthy status quo, as well as getting the job done. Motivation, diplomacy and tact are some of my key skills. I have also held disciplinary hearings when required.
Communication: I have always believed communication to be a vital ingredient in running a department and have vast experience of communicating financial information to non-financial individuals, as the advertising industry tends to be dominated by finance-shy account handlers who need to be constantly ‘looked after’. I am definitely a ‘people person’.
Problem Solving: During the course of my work at The Kennel Club I have had to introduce and set up several control systems in various departments. This has been quite a cumbersome task as once again, people tend to be afraid of finance and change. As part of the introduction of the Synergist software, there were numerous hurdles that I had to clear and several teething problems came to light (and were overcome) as the system was up and running.
.
Leadership: I am a natural leader but am very adaptable with it and hence am happy to be led by others too. It is imperative that one does not lose sight of the end result – effective delegation and pulling together is what achieves results at the end of the day.
