I grew up in Panama' and I love the food there and now I live in the united states, and shirley cirric how dare you say something about our culture... I myself am not a panamanian i am american but that is my home and I consider that my culture, and I wouldnt feed my livestock Panamanian food only because its too good to waste like that...

Shirley Ciric, Is it any wonder that Americans are disdained worldwide? You are a perfect example of "The Ugly American." To give your intellect a boost, you may want to run to your local library (assuming you know what a library is and how to find one)and check out a copy. It's an old yet timeless book . . . as you aptly prove. While others have expressed understandable anger at your comments, I simply feel sorry for you for it is mind-boggling that anyone who can read and write is so indescribably ignorant. Learn to open your mind or you'll find yourself spiraling into a black hole from whence there is no return. By the way, in the interest of full disclosure, I have dual citizenship: Panamanian and American. I was born and raised in Panama. Still, I am a much rounder person for being able to appreciate my Panamanian heritage and my adopted one, including foods that please and displease my taste buds, as well as the myriad cultures found in the United States.

Shirley Ciric:One of the things I forgot to mention is this: unlike food consumers in the United States, Panamanians often eat FRESH foods and drink healthy fruit beverages; for example, Panamanians cook and eat seafood sometimes within the hour after it's fished from one of two oceans or countless rivers in the country; vegetables are cooked within minutes after they are pulled from the ground; fruits within seconds after they are plucked from trees. In fact, I often smile at the irony of paying $1.99 each (sometimes a little less)for mangoes at my favorite grocery store, Whole Foods. When I look at the size of those $1.99 mangoes, I laugh, recalling how I used to throw them away or feed them to livestock because they were "too small, " too "inmature." Those of us who ate livestock would be hardpressed to think chicken, beef, or pork were at their flavorable/nutritious best AFTER being FROZEN and traveling hundreds of miles before reaching grocery stores. As to fast foods that Americans are so fond of, when it comes to what kinds of foods are best served to livestock, let's not even go there. Please! Do yourself, if not your culture (whatever it may be), a favor and think before putting your foot in your mouth where apparently you only have a taste for the mundane.

Shirley Ciric:Also think "mad cow disease" and why overseas consumers think U.S. livestock is not fitting to feed them. You know what? The more I think of it, the more irritated I am by your comments. Not because it was politically incorrect, or because you are not entitled to your opinion. Indeed you are entitled to your opinion. You are not entitled though to change the facts; i.e., that the U.S. feed livestock better than Panama feeds its people. Even if Panamanian food does not suit your taste buds, which is a matter of personal preference, at least Panama is feeding its people. Do you have any idea how many people . . . men, women and CHILDREN go hungry in the United States every day? THINK, SHIRLEY, THINK! Use your brain to do some CRITICAL thiking . . . make an effort to use the idea of critical thinking as food for thought.

This message is for Shirley Ciric. I would suggest you stay in the US instead of visiting countries and having negative comments made. If you want good seafood, come to Panama. You show your ignorance in ordering beef in a Country known for its wonderful seafood cuisine. Stay in the US!!!!!!

Many authentic recipes as well as factoids and history. A must for the Central American foodie. Also includes a changing glossary of English/Pana cooking words.
