I wonder if this thing I heard is true? Can anyone tell me wether people in New Guinea eat the common house pets called Guinea Pigs, my friend told me that tehy did and thats why the country is called New Guinea

Now why would you believe the country is named after a housepet?Do you think China was named because the people who lived there couldn't stop eating the dishes? If you want to talk about the eating of housepets, take a look at THAT country.

In my tribe they did not specifically eat guinea pigs, but that's only because there weren't any. Meat is so scarce in PNG that they eat pretty much any meat they can get their hands on, including mice, eel, frog legs, and such. So I wouldn't be surprised if guinea pig was also on the menu.One more thing: no, Papua New Guinea was definitely not named after guinea pigs, although your friend is not the first to assume that. I'm not entirely sure, but just as New England was an extension of England, I think that the name New Guinea probably extends from Guinea, in Africa. The "Papua" has to do with the region. The language family of that area is called Papuan.
