5 ways to process and keep your iguana food - Chapter 5 of Goblin's story

Thank author of this post/comment"Green Goblin"

The story of a beloved green iguana

Chapter 5

Since I have gone over the foods that should be included (or not) in your iguana's diet, I will give you five ways to make it stay fresh longer.

1. After you bring home your greens and veggies, make sure you wash them thoroughly and pat them completely dry with a paper towel. This will ensure you have removed harmful chemicals that are sprayed on them (that even people don't want to ingest) and it will help keep them from rotting from the moisture.

2. When preparing the food for your iguana, remember that the size of the pieces should correspond to the size of your iguana. Smaller igs need more finely chopped food and you can give a larger iguana bigger pieces of food. When you prepare the food, try tearing it into pieces with your fingers if possible instead of using a knife or scissors. If you DO use a knife, try using a plastic one. This will also retard the rot of the greens and veggies.

3. For harder like squash and yams, you can use a food processor or hand grater to get the food into appropriate size pieces.

4. When you store your food, use either a tupperware container with a paper towel in the bottom to absorb moisture, or a ziplock bag. For bagging, make sure you get as much air out as possible before you close the bag completely. Storing the greens in the fresh produce section of your fridge helps too.

5. Finally, when you purchase food for your iguana, remember that many greens are sold by the pound and you should only buy as much as your iguana will eat in a few days to reduce waste. Once the greens start to smell, your iguana will most likely not want to eat them (would you?). If they are not sold by the pound and you end up with a bunch you don't need, you could always bag them up and take them to your local pet store to use to feed their iguanas.

Goblin has been steadily growing at this point and is a nice green and blue color. I have started to handle him more and more and he actually seems to enjoy being held for a little bit. Since he was doing so well on his new diet, I wanted to share the extra food (and a little knowledge) with the local pet store. They looked at me like I was insane, but I don't know, maybe they fed it to them because they felt guilty throwing it away.

I could only buy some of the greens by the stalk group or head, so while he is still little, I have plenty left over to give away.

Also, you could make a tasty salad for yourself and enjoy the same thing your iguana eats. Then you will BOTH be eating a healthy meal!
