can americans live in puerto rico? can they work? is there any jobs at all they could do?

Reply #2 ness from makati (Contact Member) -

americans can of course live and work in puerto rico, as the island is a commonwealth of the US.

hanna, i suggest you check realtors' websites. you can also check Global Property Guide's website. It shows a list of statistics on average rental, country guide, buying guide, etc. Check it out. It has been very useful for me.

Hi,

I`m very interested in the life in Puerto Rico. Can someone tell me how the situation for children is? How much do people earn in PR and are there a lot of poor people?

It would be very nice if someone takes few minutes to tell me something about the island. I`m from Austria/Europe and have absolutely no idea how life in PR is.

Thanks,

Corinna

For English-language schools I recommend St John's in Condado, Academia Perpetuo Socorro in Miramar, Baldwin School in Guaynabo. All of these are expensive and have entrance examination and other requirements.

Life in Puerto Rico is a challenge. The best way to describe Puerto Rico is controlled chaos. If you like a very active lifestyle, you thrive in urban environments and don't mind noise, it's for you. You will have to learn Spanish, but immersion is the fastest and best way to pick it up. Everyone speaks English but not everyone speaks it well. Median income is low. There is 12.7% unemployment at the moment, with all that that entails. And the island just made the mistake of electing a republican governor. It's going to get a lot worse over the next four years, in my opinion. I would stay in Europe if I were you. I'm leaving in the summer as soon as my son graduates from HS, and I was born and raised here...

with Juan Jimenez that PR is chaotic. However I would not have called its chaos controlled... but I am a European, a citizen of a very well organized Scandinavian country, so my expectations might be higher.

Despite being liberal, I disagree that Fortuno, albeit "republican" is a worse choice than his "democratic" alternative, Acevedo Vila, who, as my PuertoRican friends call him, was the worst, most incompetent PR governor ever. And Fortuno won not because he was republican, but because he is for full statehood - as the polls indicate.

I would add to Juans comments that Puerto Rico is one of the most (fourth) UNEQUAL countries in the Americas. The PR rich feel entitled to steal and exploit PR masses, many of whom feel entitled to do nothing and live on government handout supplanted by black economy, since the wages here are so low.

It all depends on what kind of life you want here. I will be glad to show you around here but i can't afford to do it for free. My self i just came here and figured it out as i went. email me if you want and i will help as much as i can. I did come across this by fluke. i love it here no more frio came from colorado

I am considering several overseas places to spend the last of my retirement years - I am 67. I am considering the Philippines as my #1 pick but some friends told me to check out Puerto Rico also.

I would appreciate any advice or information regarding CHEAPLY living in PR. I need ALL the details - rent, electric costs, food and such.

Thanks!

Never been to Puerto Rico but have family in the USVI. The cost of living isn't bad compared to where I live, NY, but I don't know how the wages are.
