HiMy partner and I are thinking of moving out to Romania to start a small business. Although we have searched online we cannot find very much about what the cost of living is like there in relation to the UK. Can anyone help?

Hi SorinThank you for your reply. We have quite a lot of information about the cost of living in Romania, which seems considerably lower than in the UK where we are living at the moment. There are other questions though if you do not mind. I have heard that a canadian firm are considering building a new international airport near Sidiu have you heard naything more about that? I also heard that there were plans for a Dracual theme park in Transylvania but that the location was now moved to elsewhere in Romania (near Bucahrest) would you perhaps have any further information on that. Finally I watched a program the other day on Romania and it stated that there was only one main road. This did not strike me as truth as I am sure there are more, could you perhaps give me more information again. Many thanks for your assistance

As you may have seen from my post, I'm thinking of relocating from Oz to R. Here's a few things I've just found out. Rents - in Bucharest seem sky high - especially in the newer appartments, close into the city centre, which is where you want to be. We're talking E1500 to E2000 plus per month. But, many say it ranks as one of the ugliest capitals in the Eu because of all the outlying ugly tower blocks that surround it, mainly built in the Communist era but still home to thousands.Nice, central serviced appartments start at E50/night. So, maybe the option is to buy. Entry level seems about E140,000. But the rents seem odd when you consider the following - wages - minimum wage is currently E105/month with a median wage of E330/month. Bucharest ranks as the cheapest city in E at 113th place! The per capita income (even adjusted for the lower cost of living) is less than a third of the EU average. I found a web site that compared prices for a whole list of items to Holland and R was way cheaper. Dining out is very reasonable. It seems the big problem for us is to find employment and unless you are sent there by your EU based company, or can speak R, good luck. I thought of offering ESL courses (Advanced English) but the pay is very low. Let me know if you here more. Cheers F

Those of you considering Bucharest to live in - think twice. I've been stuck in this dump for several years. It is not cheap. It is more expensive then Washington DC. Rent is incredibly high, especially in any desirable area to live - which still means an old unpleasant building and poorly furnished. Then you will pay mataniance fees determined by the administration which are exaggerated and be spied on by them. "Did you have guests over two days in a row - are you paying a fee for them to use the elevator?" I've lived in different buildings here in different places and the story is always the same. The city is incredibly dirty. I've never slept a good night here. Foreign visitors always comment to me "since I've came here, I haven't slept a good night." People in general are extremely rude. Customer service is the worst in the world. (I will re-enter a send a link about this I found on the net). It is by far the worst city in Europe. An apartment here of similar quality to what you would find in the West will cost you at least as much but usually quite a bit more...and the surroundings will be much less pleasant.if you must come to Romania, go to Transylvania. If you want my opinion - just go somewhere else.

HelloI am currently researching for a consumer documentary about buying property abroad and would love to hear all sorts of stories from people who have taken the plunge. I am especially interested in hearing about a range of scenarios - from damaging weather conditions, to building disasters or even just something strange and spooky about the property that’s affecting their lives. If you have a cautionary tale to tell then please contact me at Melanie.Tompkins@ITV.com

Cost of living in Romania is very low, around 4 up to 8 times everything is cheaper than in London for example.Normal prices: - big 500g salad with tuna, in Bucarest center: 4 euros - big sandwich, in Bucharest center restaurant: 2.5 euros you can buy of course everything 3 times cheaper than in restaurants, when you go purchase from supermarkets Language might be a problem if you are not familiar with the latin languages (Italians and Spanish will understand Romanian usually the quickest from all foreigners) If you are looking for a local guide for your staying in Romania, or you need an excellent interpreter and translator romanian / english and french language (he speaks them without fault) I can highly recommend Daniel who i have used for some time now, he graduated foreign languages and he is fluent in spoken and written English and french. His contact no is 0040721474777 , if you contact him - tell him Colin gave you his details.

Hey you foreigners that wanna invade my country ! :) I can confirm what Colin said above, with some more mentioning: Cost of living is lower than other countries, but the general idea is that you can do well if you win/get/earn money from outside and spend it in Romania. And if you come here for a top well qualified job, try to get the salary the same or little less than the developed Germany/France EU countries. For example @chandler from the Philippines, those 300 is little above average here, but there are alot of romanians that earn alot less. Usually is 8h/day 5 days/week, but I don't know hotel work. It will be good if it's one of the 5 stars hotels. @Nasir Mahood usually students outside town or outside country rent an apartment which can cost between 200-300 Euro/month depending on facilities, often with 1-2 other students so won't cost that much per person. @Andrew Gonsalves if your are really top management and that's not just a word we romanians borrowed ('cos if you are a shop attendant, you are called a manager nowdays in Romania), you shouln'd have problems with cost of living. Only problem you might have with rent, especially in the capital. @Anjali 1. Cost of living - low if you earn the money abroad or in an well qualified job, for the normal romanian worker it's hard to get a car or a house from just the wage. 2. State of development - emerging country, especially in the big towns there are construction sites everywhere. The technology exists, like cable, internet, celular phones. Even more advanced stuff, whatever you like if you can afford it. 3. Social security - like in any country, if you don't go out in the „ghettos” in the middle of the night, you'll most likely be ok. You won't get kidnapped and certainly not shot as we are not like the russians, but if you brag and expose your richness in the wrong places you might get robbed. 4. Expected Salary packages - depends on the job, if you are employeed by the state or by private buisness, if you have a degree or not etc ... the good jobs are like everywhere else: banking, multi-national companies, luxury sales, advertising and mass-media etc. Hope that helped get an idea for atleast some people and sorry I can't give straight figures, like it costs X euro for food and Y euro for clothes and Z euro for rent. The fact is there are all range of prices here and it would be good if luxury wasn't one of your purposes. The country still has its problems, I can't lie to you, we are not Sweden or Norway, we still have way more poor people than above decent living ones.

I am an importer of fine leather products to the U.S. I have seen some product coming out of Romania online. What do you know about the quality of leather goods from Romania? Does it come close to Italian made quality and are there many manufacturers? Can anyone hook me up with some leather manufacturers, i.e., purses, travel bags, etc.? • Page 1 (Original Post) • Page 2 • Page 3 • Page 4 (Newest Replies) •
