I am writing a scholarly article on Olayinka Burney-Nicol (also known as Miranda Burney-Nicol, 1927-1996), who signed her art Olayinka, and I am looking for persons who had met her or knew her, and also for anyone who has examples of her art and/or catalogues of her exhibitions. I knew her 1978-80 when I was conducting anthropological research in Sierra Leone. Any help will be appreciated. Trackbacks

I know a little about her and I certainly would like to be able to add to whatever you would like to write on Ms Burney-Nicol. But I am rather intrigued thay you call your proposed article "scholarly"; Isn't that something for your readership to determine?Regards

Thank you for your replyBy scholarly I mean a number of things, including that I will not get paid for the article, and that it is for a scholarly journal and not for a newspaper or popular magazine (although some news articles are scholarly of course.) It may appear in a journal such as African Arts (with photos of her work) or in Africa: Journal of the International African Institute (London) or somewhere else. That will depend upon what it is like when it is finished (It is oonly in process now)what publication might be interested in it. That being said I would be very interested in any information or photos of Olayinka's art work that you could supply. Any information from you that is used in the article will be cited to your name, of course. I knew her 1978-80 when I was conducted anthropological research in Limba coutry (Wara Wara Bafodea), and I visited Freetown at times.. Please do respond to me at my email address. Thank you very much for your interest. Emeritus Professor Simon Ottenberg

My email is otten@u.washington.edu. A retired University of Washington Professor. I have been involved in contemporary African art now for some twelve years, mostly Nigerian, but now interested in Olayinka. Please do contact me. Someone mentioned your name to me, but did not know where you were, but thought you were in Germany. Thank you.

Hello, I was doing a search on Olayinka Burney-Nicol today and happened to see this message. Dont know how long ago it was posted. She happens to be my Grandma and I actually have some of her paintings hanging on my wall back home in Freetown. My mom obviously knows alot more about her so I can definately help if you are still interested in learning more about her, as I myslef would love it learn more about her work and the rich cultural history of Africa.

I would very much like to be in touch with you and eventually to see what pictures that Olayinka created that you have. Please reply to my email address so that we can start contact. I am hoping also to be in Freetown for several weeks in early April and would love to visit with you and see what pictures you have and talk with you. This will be very helpful. I am making progess on the project but need very much to meet people in England and Freetown who knew Olayinka, and to see more of her work. I look forward to hearing from you. Sorry over the the delay in replying. I just discovered your note here. With best wishes. Simon Ottenberg.
