Hi, I am being offered a posting as Head of Finance with an International telecom Company based in Sudan, with a total package of approx USD 8500 per month, could you please tell me as fellow expats whether this package is reasonable for rent, living expenses and schooling for 2 kids and savings.

I would appreciate your feedback as a fellow expat.

Thank You

Prakash

Is that a real offer, really from the company with an interview?

Or is the job scam running around in Nigeria where you get a job offer for an excessive salary without an interview... and then are asking to send $1750 or so for papers and visa...

Of course you send the $1750 and get only the receipt from Western Union to show for your efforts!

Average two bedroom apartment rental is +/- 1000 USD/month. Average three bedroom with two bathroom rental is +/- 1500 USD/month. Almost all of them include fully furnished modern furnitures if it is a new apartment. New constructions are coming up everywhere in Khartoum lately and the prices are getting lowerer if you have patience. I once been offered a three bed room apartment for 1000 USD/month (initially they asked for 1500USD and then 1200USD). Didn't choose that place because I prefer to stay somewhere near to Supermarkets and restaurents in the walking distance. Manshia and Street 60 area are the best for easy access to variety of restaurents and supermarkets. Another good location is Khartoum2 which you have easy access to many restaurents, Ozone Cafe, and several supermarkets too.

1kg of Tomatoe/Potatoe is +/- 4 Sudanese Pounds (2 USD). A loaf of bread is 6 sudanese pounds (3 USD). 10kg rice bag is around 25 Sudanese Pound (12.5 USD). +/- 24 Sudanese Pounds (12 USD) for a kilo of beef from supermarkets and it could be cheaper from local butcher.

Sandwich for a lunch with a pepsi and chip at average restaurents is around +/- 16 Sudanese Pounds (8 USD). Average dinner or lunch eating at Solataire or alike is around +/- 30 Sudanese Pounds (15 USD). Gas is cheap, it cost around 14 Sudanese Pounds (7 USD) for around 20 liters cylinder. So, if you are cooking at home, it doesn't cost much apart from the house rental.

You need to have a minimum income of 2000 USD to cover the living cost and a little savings unless accomodation is provided. Almost everywhere in Africa, you should spare at least +/- 1200 USD for the accomodation and food alone unless you are sharing an apartment with friends.
