I am looking for a high caliber divorce lawyer who speaks English in Tunis. Can anyone refer me to only reputable ones?

Hi, My Tunisian husband and I got married in Las Vegas. We had not registered our marriage in both of our countries because our conjugal home is in neither place. One day, he quietly left, took all his belongings with him while I was sleeping, just leaving a note that he was not coming back because he has no more money to live with me although he never spent a cent! He has sent me several emails demanding me to get a divorce processed. The one who wanted a divorce was him but he did not want to initiate it because he was probably afraid of settlement. I of course did not want the divorce so I refused and just waited days, months, years until he gives me this paper to contest. Nothing arrived. A few days ago after 2 1/2 years waiting, by some sheer coincidence, I got an email from a common acquaintance who intimated to me that my husband apparently has just entered into a civil marriage in Tunisia to a Tunisian woman while we are still married. My husband never told me his plan. As both these marriages required a sworn statement before a paralegal both of which he signed, I would assume he defies the legal repercussions. I would like to seek help from a high caliber Tunisian divorce lawyer about my legal rights.

Jema, I think the same this is happening to me. If you go onto the British Embassy website in Tunis you will find a list of lawyers recommended by them. The English speaking ones will have an * next to their details. My husband has been slowly taking money from me over nine years and I think he may have divorced me behind my back and remarried in Tunisia, but under English law we are still married and we are both resident in the UK. I too, am going through a process and am seeking a good lawyer in Sousse that you cannot bribe. I have joined the Forum in Tunisia.com and they have been very helpful. Similar to this one. My husband's friend married a Tunisian girl while he was still married to a Swedish national and somehow the authorities got a tip off when he tried to bring his new bride into the UK. He spent about a year in a Tunisian prison. It is an offence for which they can go to prison. I understand that since 2007 under Tunisian law if you are both resident in the UK (not sure about other countries)then you can only be divorced in that country. A good Tunisian lawyer should be able to verify this. Please reply to this post if you need further advice as I am trying to go through the same process. By any chance, are you older than your husband? I am and he only married me to see how much money he could get out of me. When I started to come to my senses, it was too later. He realised that he was not going to get any more out of me, so I think he has left me. He is presently in Tunisia and has cut off his mobile number.
