I'm traveling to Uruguay in a few weeks with a volunteer group (we're staying 2 months), and I want to know how Uruguayans feel about African-Americans. I understand that they have a small Afro-Uruguayan community, and that they are treated very poorly. I realize that I will not look like an Afro-Uruguayan (in terms of dress, demeanor, etc.) But obviously, I'll stand out. I've traveled outside the US before, so curious stares and glances are to expected. Will they see me as an American who is black, a curiosity? Or will the majority dislike me simply because of the color of my skin? I'm sure there will be both types of people, but which attitude is more prevalent?

no discrimination here. maybe people will look at you, because you come from abroad, and they are curious, but I do not think it is for your skin color. if you walk down the street like a normal person and you behave in an appropriate manner, I do not think you have problems here.Remember that Uruguayans are characterized as being conservative, and maybe they can be shy if you are someone very outgoing but surely, you will a have very nice experience visiting uruguay.
